If you didn't find Big Bash League getting exciting a couple of days ago, you'd certainly find it so now. As many as five teams are still contending for the top spot and the momentum shifts are happening with almost every match. There are three teams, however, that are separated from the top five on the ladder. With competition beginning to gather pace, those teams would quickly need to rack up some wins so as to stay in the tournament.
Brisbane Heat, placed at the sixth spot, are set to take on Hobart Hurricanes on 30th December 2020 at the Gabba Cricket Ground, Brisbane . The match is of mighty importance for both sides as a win for Heat will keep them amid the thick on things whereas a win for Hurricanes will push the Hurricanes among the top two teams. One thing is certain, though - this is going to be a hard-fought encounter and a mouth-watering contest is certainly on the cards.
Before the two teams met a couple of days ago at the Gabba, Hobart Hurricanes seemed to be flying high with 11 points to their name and were favorites to win that match. However, the tables turned drastically as Heat defeated Hurricanes with considerable ease. It was expected that the availability of Dawid Malan would add to the Hurricanes' strength, but it didn't make any positive difference whatsoever.
Currently, the Hurricanes are placed at the fifth spot on the points table but are still well and truly in the race to rise up the ladder. Apart from the 11 points to their name, they have a decent net run-rate of 0.127, which could be crucial should things get closer at the end of the league stage.
Against Heat, in the last match, their batting woes were clearly apparent as none of their batsmen managed to stay at the wicket for enough time. Having said that, we expect that their woes will not be there for long, given the batting lineup they have. Even though Matthew Wade isn't available, D'Arcy Short and Ben McDermott are as good as any at the top. Dawid Malan has added to their strength in the middle order and he is likely to come good sooner rather than later. They bat deep with Handscomb, Colin Ingram, and Faulkner available in the middle-order.
In addition to the solid batting they have, they have a decent bowling unit, thanks to the wide array of all-rounders they have. Wil Parker, Nathan Ellis, and James Faulkner are pretty capable with the bat and have done a decent job with the ball. Hurricanes' bowling unit didn't have a lot of runs to play with against Heat and that is probably what cost them the match.
All in all, the Hurricanes have a decent unit and their last loss could be interpreted as a minor blip. They'd want to bounce back to the winning ways and should they perform to their potential, they shouldn't have a tough time tomorrow.
D'Arcy Short, Ben McDermott, Dawid Malan, Peter Handscomb, Colin Ingram, Tim David, Keemo Paul, Nathan Ellis, Scott Boland, Wil Parker, Riley Meredith.
Brisbane Heat went through a lot of ups and downs even before the tournament started as their management made plenty of changes to their squad. Going by how the tournament has so far panned out for them, the changes do not seem to be working. Additionally, the absence of Chris Lynn has left their top-order in a bit of shambles and that is something they'd need to deal with on priority.
Currently, Brisbane Heat are placed at the sixth spot on the points table and their success in the last match was their first in the tournament. However, another couple of wins should put them back in the hunt and that is what they'll be looking to do. The fact that they registered a win against the Hurricanes recently will add to their confidence.
Their batting seems to be a bit fragile with a lot dependent on their top order. It was apparent in their last match as well as they stumbled after Max Bryant and Sam Heazlett got them off to a terrific start. They slid from 73-0 to 6-102 before Jimmy Peirson and James Bazley added 50 runs together to take Heat across the line. Their batting seems to be well-settled on paper, but with Chris Lynn absent, they do not have anyone who can play an imposing knock. They'd need their top-order to come good and if that happens, the Heat will certainly be in business.
With the bowling, however, Brisbane Heat seem to be well-settled with good amalgamation of pace and spin. Mujeeb Ur Rahman has done pretty well over the years for them and continues to be their mainstay. The inclusion of Lewis Gregory adds to their batting depth without compromising on the bowling variety. In fact, he was the pick of Heat bowlers in the previous match as he returned with the figures of 22 for 3 in his four overs.
All in all, Brisbane Heat may not have individuals known for their exploits in this format, but as a team, they are certainly more than sum of their parts. They'd need their top-order to do well in the upcoming match and if that happens, Brisbane Heat could make things difficult for Hobart Hurricanes yet again.
Max Bryant, Sam Heazlett, Jack Wildermuth, TLW Cooper, Lewis Gregory, Jimmy Peirson, James Bazley, Simon Milenko, Mark Steketee, Xavier Bartlett, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Check out the Dream11 fantasy team lineup for the upcoming Big Bash League match, which is to be played between Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat. Don't forget to check back the latest updated team lineup right after the toss.
Hobart Hurricanes lost the previous match against the run of play and they are likely to come out better prepared in this match. Brisbane Heat, on the other hand, will be brimming with confidence and that could come in handy when they face the familiar foes again. On paper and on-performance in the tournament so far, Hobart Hurricanes seem to be doing better than Brisbane Heat. Even though Brisbane Heat have the advantage of playing at their home turf, we believe Hobart Hurricanes are better placed to emerge on top in this important fixture.
