HBH vs MLS Match Prediction - Jan 09, 2023

The Stars might be last on the ladder but still have some good players on the roster. They nearly picked up a win against the Sixers and have had good performances from bowler Luke Wood and batter Joe Clarke.

The Hurricanes dropped their recent game to the Renegades and have lost two in a row. Their best bowler, Paddy Dooley, injured his finger and could be out for a few games.

HBH vs MLS Team Previews

Hobart Hurricanes

The Hurricanes had a promising start to the BBL season but have looked a bit shaky recently. With six points and resting at sixth place on the ladder, Hobart has lost two in a row and things get even worse with the news that their top bowler, Paddy Dooley (12 wickets) picked up a finger injury and could be sidelined for a while.

The Hurricanes have an impressive batting lineup led by Matthew Wade (206 runs), but there’s also a lot of great consistency from Tim David (183), Ben McDermott (172), and Caleb Jewell (164). Making runs doesn’t seem to be the problem, but the bowling attack could use some extra strength.

With Dooley possibly out for a while, Riley Meredith (11 wickets) and Nathan Ellis (8) will have to step up and force the Stars to defend rather than attack. It’s been a while since either bowler had really impressive bowling stats, so this makes us lean towards Melbourne.

Melbourne Stars

If the Stars are going to make a go at the post-season, then now’s the time to pick up their game. At last place on the ladder and only four points, the Stars are having a season to forget with only one win in five matches.

It’s not like the Stars are without great batters, as Joe Clarke’s 244 runs this season is right up there with other batsmen in the BBL. Apart from a duck against the Renegades, Clarke is a consistent batter who piles on the runs and his accolades even feature a 101* performance this season.

Beau Webster is providing solid help to Clarke, although Marcus Stoinis is proving to be one of the hardest batters to predict, as he can go from consecutive ducks to 74 runs in the blink of an eye. He’s a great player, but his shot-making decisions mean he’s either scoring big or not at all.

With the ball, captain Adam Zampa has been decent with eight wickets, although spinners rarely take big-wicket hauls in the BBL. Luke Wood’s 14 wickets have helped the Stars to stay relevant and he’s the key factor in any game. The Stars played hard against the Sixers and were unlucky not to get a victory.

HBH vs MLS Toss Prediction

The Stars are 7-2 when batting second against the Hurricanes, so they’ll likely bowl first if winning the toss to make the most of the pitch.

Pitch and Conditions

The Blundstone Arena is often regarded as a pitch best suited for batting second, but it’s not unusual to see a lot of bounce and movement from pace bowlers. Expect scores of around 170 here.

HBH vs MLS Betting Tips

Stars vs. Hurricanes won’t be the No. 1 match on anyone’s schedule, but there is still a good game of cricket to be seen here. Clarke and Stoinis should be able to help Melbourne get a much-needed victory over a Hurricanes team that appears to be struggling, especially with Dooley out.

If Zampa and Wood limit the Hurricanes to a poor total of around 120-130, then the Stars’ batters should do the rest. Plus, the Stars are 12-6 against the Hurricanes and have won the last two matchups. The odds for a Melbourne victory are worth a try.

Bet on Melbourne to win.
