HBH vs SYT Match Prediction - Jan 15, 2023

It’s been a bit of a break for the Hurricanes, as they haven’t played since January 9th when they defeated the Stars. Hobart is 6th on the BBL ladder with 8 points, while the Thunder are in 5th with 10 points. Sydney has lost two in a row, despite the return of David Warner to the squad.

The Hurricanes are hoping for the return of bowler Paddy Dooley (finger injury) and Matthew Wade (personal reasons), but there has been no official word if they’ll play. It may well be a game-time decision for these two players.

HBH vs SYT Team Previews

Hobart Hurricanes

It’s hard to say what Hurricanes team we’ll get, as they haven’t played for a while and still have question marks over the status of Dooley and Wade. If those two are in the squad against the Thunder, then they have a better chance.

There’s no doubt that batter Caleb Jewell has been the side’s best player so far, knocking up a total of 234 runs thanks to 12 sixes and 22 fours. Wade, when available, has been solid with 206 runs. We thought Tim David (186) and Ben McDermott (174 runs) would have a bigger impact, however.

The Hurricanes’ bowlers are perhaps the reason as to why they’re low on the table, as Paddy Dooley (12 wickets) and Riley Meredith (13 wickets) are the best on the team, but those tallies are quite low compared to other teams. Meredith’s 2/25 against the Stars is what the team loves to see!

Hobart Hurricanes Playing 11

Ben McDermott, Caleb Jewell, Matthew Wade, Zak Crawley, Timothy David, Asif Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Tom Andrews, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith.

Sydney Thunder

The Thunder are still looking decent after a 5-5 record, especially with the news that David Warner can help the squad for a short while at least. He scored 19 from 20 deliveries in his first game, but it’s been 9 years since he played in a BBL match, so we’ll give him a break.

The Thunder will certainly look to Warner for help, but Oliver Davies is the man to watch, as he’s picked up 278 runs (including 14 sixes) and has scored above 50 in three of his last four games. Alex Ross (194) and Matthew Gilkes (171) have also provided solid assistance.

The Thunder bowlers have yet to strike fear in the hearts of batsmen just yet, but we like what we’re seeing from fast bowler Nathan McAndrew with 12 wickets, especially after his 3/29 versus Perth. Daniel Sams’ 11 wickets is a much-needed boost.

HBH vs SYT Toss Prediction

The Thunder are a bit worse when batting first against the Hurricanes, so they may look to bowl them out for a lower total and try to chase runs.

Pitch and Conditions

We’ll see a fast outfield with a balanced pitch that seems to suit batters and pace bowlers. It’s common to see scores around 170 in a T20 match thanks to one boundary being shorter than the other.

HBH vs SYT Betting Tips

This one is not easy to choose, as both sides have been up and down recently, but even though the Hurricanes are the favourite, we like the odds given to the Thunder.

It’s worth a bet given the fact that Warner is back and Davies is playing brilliantly. If McAndrew can take care of the tough Hurricanes batters like Jewell and David, then the Thunder can pull off the victory.

Bet on the Thunder to win.
