Hobart Hurricanes Women

The Hurricanes have been a bit hard to predict lately, as they can go from competitive to lacklustre very quickly this season. Still, they’re 3-2 right now and did earn themselves a good win against the Renegades (who are just awful right now).

Despite pretty poor batting performances from Mignon du Preez and Lizelle Lee, who are normally very reliable batters in this squad, the runs thankfully came from Elyse Villani and Heather Graham. Captain Villani had been quite underwhelming before this match, as she had scored only 16 runs in four matches. However, whatever she did before this match is working, as she picked up 29 crucial runs in a game that the Renegades were fighting hard to win.

The best batting performance was easily that of allrounder Heather Graham, who continues to shine for the Hurricanes with great double figure scores in every game. Her 39* undoubtedly saved Hobart from an embarrassing loss to Melbourne, and we’re more than excited to see how Graham continues to perform this season. Graham wasn’t so good with the ball (0/33), but she’s proven in other matches that she’s capable of taking big wickets.

All eyes will be on bowler Maisy Gibson for this match, as she was already becoming one of the best spinners in the league, but now she’s gone to another level after taking 4/24 (ER: 6.00) in the win over Melbourne. Let’s see her keep this up in other games.

Brisbane Heat Women

The Heat could use a bit of momentum, as they won three straight, only to lose two in a row, although losing to Perth and Adelaide is no great shame.

Opening batter Georgia Redmayne is still leading the league with 225 runs, but we’d like to see her post more consistent scores. She did make 98* a few weeks ago, but she’s scored less than 15 runs in three combined matches. Redmayne has the skills and experience, but more stability is necessary.

The Heat’s batting lineup is strong, as even if Redmayne fails to pick up a big score, you know that the likes of Kerr, Voll, Harris, or Wyatt are all equally capable of hitting a half century or better. The bowling attack is equally remarkable, with captain Jessica Jonassen (13 wickets) and Amelia Kerr (10 wickets) providing steady overs without giving up too many runs.

Pooja Vastrakar has been poor with the ball, as she’s getting knocked around the ground and barely chipping in with any wickets (only one so far). The Heat have all the tools, but on a good day when every player has the right mindset, they can easily defeat anyone in the league and should take care of the Hurricanes.
