About the Match
The Lions will face Mumbai Indians in their third group match on 27th September at Jaipur. Both teams have two points each on the table due to their previous matches getting abandoned due to rains. Mumbai Indians played the opening group match at Jaipur against Rajasthan Royals and lost the match by 5 wickets with 2 balls to spare. The Lions on the other hand couldn’t play their first league match against Scorchers because of bad weather and lost their 2nd match against the Royals by a considerable margin. Both teams are now desperate for a first win in the tournament and will definitely come out all guns blazing. The winner of this game would have outside chance to qualify for the semis, but the losers would certainly fly home.
This team from South Africa has a fairly good mix of young and experienced players. The only overseas player in the squad, Sohail Tanvir could not make any dent on hard hitting Royals and conceded too many runs in his last over, though he took the wicket of the dangerous looking Rahane. Pretorious and Tsotsobe with 2 wickets each could contain the batsmen to certain extent. However the other bowlers were too expensive. Petersen had a tough target of 183 runs in front of him and having lost 3 wickets in the first five overs they had an uphill task to achieve. In the company of Viljoen, he tried to build the innings but both were bowled out by Tambe. They failed to reach the target by 30 runs in spite of a well-made 40 in 28 balls by Petersen. The team has good combination of left and right combination in batting which can frustrate the fielding side and they will have to perform better from here on to survive in the tournament.
Mumbai will certainly feel that they’ve lost the home advantage due to relentless rain in Ahmedabad. However, this team has young and talented players, with three Aussies and two West Indians in the squad who can adjust to new conditions quickly. Johnson, Nile and Pollard were not as effective against the Royals and Harbhajan and Ojha also could not exploit the wicket. Pollard, Rayudu, Karthik and Rohit Sharma have the capacity to overcome tall targets, but they failed badly against Royals. None of the reputed batsmen, except for Rohit and Pollard, could live up to the expectations. They have to do some serious home work to tackle the Lions. Johnson, Harbhajan, Ojha, Nile and Pollard have to analyze their bowling to identify the weak points to overcome Lions. Dhawan bowled well and should keep up the good work. They have a very good batting line up with left right combinations to unsettle the fielders and bowlers.
Hard hitting Lions are looking for a win, after their disappointing loss against Royals. They could not gain momentum against RR in last match whereas Mumbai Indians could not build a big total against the Royals. Both teams will need to bring out strong performances going into this crucial match. The Lions’ squad is certainly a better squad than the odds in their favor suggests and their better batting form may prove too hot to handle for Mumbai Indians on a batting paradise and I expect Lions to have the last laugh.
