About the Match
Otago Volts are all set to give wings to its semi-final hopes as they take on Highveld Lions on 29 Sep at Jaipur. Otago already has 6 points from two matches whereas Lions have only 2 points from three matches. Otago won handsomely against Scorchers, setting a huge target of 242 and winning comfortably by 62 runs whereas Lions lost their match against Royals, falling short by 30 runs and against Mumbai, lost the match by 7 wickets. Otago will try to maintain the momentum and win this match that might decide the composition of the semifinalists in Group A and this will surely be an exciting match. However, a win for Highveld Lions will open up the table meaning anyone from the pool can qualify for the semifinals.
This Otago team has surprised one and all thanks to the attacking Cricket they’ve played so far. The team has the experience and talent with Neil Broom remaining unbeaten making 117 against Perth Scorchers, helping the team to a comfortable win by 62 runs. Volts have a dependable middle order that can chip in runs, rotating strike, with a very good mix of left-right batting combination, straining the opposition. Butler and McMillan can test the opposition with their pace and Bear and Wagner can surprise the batsmen with their disguising variety of spin bowling. Their last match will be against the formidable Royals and hence if they want to keep their chances of making it to the top two in the group, they have to win this contest. The team has a positive attitude and a hunger to win matches; and this is definitely the team’s biggest advantage that makes them battle it out till the last.
This is the last group league match for Highveld Lions and chances of survival look very bleak right now. The South Africans have only overseas player at their disposal in Sohail Tanvir from Pakistan who has not been very effective so far though he managed to restrict the run flow. In their last match against Mumbai, Sohail, Imran and Pretorius got a wicket each but couldn’t defend the lowly total of 140 runs. Going in first to bat, the top order couldn’t build a strong foundation. It was Petersen’s lone battle of scoring an unbeaten 35 runs and Pretorius contributing with 31 that took the score board to 140. However, it was only an uphill task from thereon for the bowlers and they failed to win the match for the team. The batsmen will have to show more fire power and the bowlers too need to tighten the loose ends going into this match. They have the team, and if their bowlers can restrict Otago to a modest total, they can certainly get past the Volts.
Lions failed to fire in all three matches and paid the price heavily by consecutively losing matches against Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians. This is the last league match and the Lions will look forward to play for their honor and to get an outside chance to qualify here. Volts are under pressure to win this match to seal their semi-final spot and making their match against Royals a dead rubber, at least for them. It won’t be an easy one for Otago Volts as Lions is a good side, but looking at their rampaging them, I think they’ll emerge victorious and book a berth in the semis.
