About the Match
The Highveld Lions come face to face with Perth Scorchers in the fourth match of the Champions League T20 series on 23 Sep at Ahmedabad. Lions were the runners-up last season of the CLT20 and under the leadership of Petersen, the side will look to better their performance this time around. The Scorchers have made major changes to their squad this year and will be led by Simon Katich. Going in as the underdogs in the competition, the Scorchers are inspired to surprise their opponents. It will be an interesting contest as both sides have a good mix of experience and youth.
The team is well acquainted with playing in the sub-continent barring a few younger players who would need some getting used to. Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso are the leading spinners for the team; with the inclusion of Lonwabo Tsotsobe who is a fast bowler, the Lions have a good bowling mix. Sohail Tanvir and Neil McKenzie are the experienced players in the team who have performed well recently and would definitely try to contribute with their skills. Quinton de Kock, Rassie, Gulam Bodi, Dwaine Pretorius and the captain himself, Alviro Petersen make for a good batting line-up. The team has talented players with a good combination of bowlers and batsmen. The players are hungry to do well in their first outing of the season and will be a tough side to beat.
This Australian side has been preparing well for the tournament and has a good mix of the young and old. Brad Hogg, Michael Beer and Adam Voges along with the captain Simon Katich provide a solid experience of playing in the challenging Indian conditions. Hogg has been a part of the IPL tournament also and is well aware of the demands of T20 cricket. Similarly, Adam Voges was a part of the Australian one-day squad in the recently concluded England tour and has contributed well with the bat. The enthusiasm of the younger players like Liam Davis, Ashton Agar, Burt Cockley and Turner combined with the skills of the senior players will add an edge to their competitive spirit. The team has new players backed up by varying skills and is definitely the one to look out for.
Both teams have extremely confident players who have a track record of performing well under pressure. In this first outing, the both teams will give it their all to win the match. Scorchers and Lions will not want to be left be far behind and will look forward to giving a tough battle to their opponents. Will it be the seasoned team of Lions, who have been playing CLT20 from last three years, who win this contest or the Scorchers who have a lot to prove going as the underdogs? This needs to be seen on Monday. However, the Lions who have quite a few players from this part of the world clearly have an advantage in this match and I think they will emerge victorious in a closely contested match.
