About the Match
The Hurricanes registered a win against Sydney Thunder by 5 wickets to accumulate two more points and move up the ladder to the 4th position with a total of 6 points; they will now host Scorchers, who have 8 points and are second on the table, at Hobart on 11th Jan. While the Hurricanes bowlers restricted the opponents to a lowly score and helped the team move towards victory, the Scorchers batsmen chased down the target set by Brisbane heat successfully to win the match by 8 wickets in the last game. It will be interesting to see both sides trying to dominate each other and win this crucial match on Sunday.
Jake Reed was outstanding with his 4-11 as he provided the opening wickets against the Thunders; along with Hilfenhaus, Bresnan and Gulbis, who took a wicket each, Reed restricted the opponents to a meagre 77 runs in 17 overs. The batsmen achieved the target of 82 runs by the 14th over and won the match through D/L method by 5 wickets; it was a good performance by the bowlers that has helped the team move up to the 4th position and the remaining two matches will decide their fate for the semi-finals. Ben Dunk, Michael Hill and Shoaib Malik batted well and they will be crucial for the contest against Scorchers; against the Renegades, the batting line-up had crumbled under pressure to chase down 163 runs and hence they must be cautious on Sunday. Their bowling attack will be key to success here and with the present momentum they look good to come out stronger against the Scorchers batsmen too.
They have recently defeated Brisbane Heat by 8 wickets, after successfully chasing 135 runs, with Michael Carberry being the top scorer for his smashing 77 off 37. Voges also batted well and contributed with 37 runs; in the earlier match too, his unbeaten 54 along with a combined effort by the bowlers helped the team defeat Strikers by 18 runs. Klinger and all-rounders like Yasir Arafat will provide the support required down the order; bowlers Tye, Agar, Arafat, Turner, Hogg and Behrendorff are performing consistently with their wicket-taking abilities and look to be peaking at the right moment. Hogg was brilliant with his 2-14 while Behrendorff also took 2 wickets to help restrict the opponents to a low 134 runs in the last match. Overall, the team has the required firepower as well as the perseverance to make it to the top four but they need to move ahead with caution against the Hurricanes, who look to be a rejuvenated lot with their recent emphatic victory.
The Scorchers have performed well all through and will be eager to finish on top of the table by winning more matches; however, Hurricanes who not only have the home advantage but also received a morale boost from their big win on Friday, will give a tough challenge to the visitors. Though the match could swing either way, we feel that Hurricanes are better positioned to win the contest.
