About the Match
The Scorchers defeated the Sydney Sixers in the semi-final match today to storm into the finals against Hobart Hurricanes, who in turn defeated tournament favorites Melbourne Stars yesterday causing a huge upset for them this season especially since the Stars had not lost a single match until now. The title clash will be hosted by the Scorchers at Perth on Feb 7th, thus succeeding for the third consecutive time to host the BBL finals and both teams performed extraordinarily well to reach here. As the temperature soared in the semi-final matches causing a lot of excitement amongst fans, the BBL tournament has come alive with the unexpected results leading to the final match and it will surely have the audience on the edge of their seats.
Craig Simmons was the hero of the day when his magnificent 112 runs off 58 deliveries became instrumental in taking the team home safely to the finals; put in to bat first, the Scorchers grabbed the opportunity to set a huge total and with Simmons producing another superb performance, the team had 193 runs under its belt. Katich and Voges contributed well but it was the regular sixes, 11 in total by Simmons that set the wheels in motion for the Scorchers. When they had to defend the total, nature took their side as the rains threatened to wash away the match but gave them a slim chance when the opponents had to score 54 runs from 5 overs, which the bowling squad made it impossible for them. Two early wickets by Behrendorff and a couple of run-outs built the pressure on the Sixers and Cummins demolished any hopes by taking 2 quick wickets and helping the team win by 5 runs by the D/L method. The team’s buoyant energy and boosted morale coupled with the strong overall performance by the players will make this a difficult side to beat.
It was Cameron Boyce’s 3 wickets giving away just 11 runs in 3 overs that helped the team in reaching their first final of the Big Bash League; with help from Laughlin, Shoaib Malik, Mascarenhas and Bollinger who took regular wickets to stifle the opponents, the bowling department restricted the Stars to a defendable total of 141 runs. Paine played a major role in the chase, scoring 65 runs off 52 deliveries and posting solid partnerships with Dunk and later with Bailey to take the team safely home. While it was an off-day for the Stars, the Hurricanes succeeded to rise up to the occasion and give their best performance to upset the favorites and it is their never-say-die attitude that has helped the team in reaching the finals this season. Most of the players have been in good form and if they focus well and come up with a good strategy, nothing can stop them in claiming the title.
The Scorchers have made it to the finals by a whisker after a scare of a washout and the victory has surely made them more confident; the Hurricanes also gave a powerful performance to charge into the finals and they look strong contenders here. However, the Scorchers have the home advantage and they seem to have better chances to win the contest against the Hurricanes.
