England pulled off what very few people would have given it a chance to do as it won the first test against India with ease. It was a dominant performance, similar to what we saw from England in 2012. Virat Kohli has now lost his previous four matches as captain and would be under pressure to turn things around.
Everything from the pitch to the SG ball, the team combination, lack of spectators, and form is being talked about.
England will be hoping to shut out the noise and continue what it has done so far. Play great cricket on the field and let everything else follow. India is not used to losing at home, This was just its second loss at home since 2012. It has not lost a series at home since it lost to England in 2012.
Expect India to hit back hard.
India vs England 2nd Test 2021 is going to be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai starting on the 13th of February 2021.
India may make noise and blame the pitch, the toss, or the ball but the fact is that it did not deserve to win. It was outplayed by a team that was better than it in every aspect of the game. India needs to take a hard look at its own preparations and come up with some answers.
It seems certain that Shahbaz Nadeem is going to miss out in the next match and Kuldeep Yadav will get a go. Washington Sundar did not bowl well and we don’t think he is going to keep his place in the team either. Seeing the kind of reverse swing Jimmy Anderson got, Virat may be tempted to play Mohammad Siraj in place of Washington Sundar.
There does not appear to be any other change necessary.
The batting lineup underperformed but there is not going to be any change in this area. The same top-6 as the previous match will continue. It is difficult to see India making the same mistakes as they did in the first test. They were under pressure of a big score and none of the batsmen applied themselves to answer back in kind.
We also think that India underestimated the England bowling and that is not a mistake that they will make again. There is no question that India has the bating to bounce back. One bad match does not make it a bad batting side. The same is true for the bowling.
Ravichandran Ashwin hit form in the second inning and both Bumrah and Ishant bowled well. Axar Patel has a good record in domestic cricket and can bat pretty well too.
India has its weaknesses but a lot of things had to go wrong for it to lose. A little bit of luck and India will be back dominating England once more.
Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, V Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, RR Pant, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj.
Joe Root continued the best form of his life as he dominated the Indian bowlers. His double century in the first inning was what set the base for England’s victory. Dom Sibley and Ben Stokes batted quite well also but getting a massive total was only possible because of Root.
England knows it has to get as many runs as possible in the first inning of every match. That is the only way to compete in India. They did not even think about declaring and that is the way forward.
The pitches will deteriorate and accelerate the match so a draw always remains unlikely even if it appears you are cutting it close.
England is going to make a few pre-determined changes for this match. Jos Buttler has flown back and will be back for the limited-overs leg of the series. James Anderson also looks likely to be rested in continuation with England’s rotation policy.
That means Ben Foakes and Stuart Broad will be back for the next match.
These changes do not weaken England in the least. Foakes is a brilliant keeper and bats very well against spin. Stuart Broad is ranked as the second-best bowler of the world and is as good an exponent of reverse swing as Anderson.
The rest of the England lineup is likely to remain the same.
We think they may be tested a bit more by India’s bowlers on a pitch that is expected to be more helpful for the spinners.
England has come very well prepared, though, and it has shown that it has the capability to beat India in any conditions that the home side comes up with. There are a lot of similarities between this England side and the one that won in 2012.
Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Daniel Lawrence, JE Root, BA Stokes, Ollie Pope, Ben Foakes, Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, Olly Stone.
The toss is going to be very crucial to the result. Winning the toss and batting first is a huge advantage in India. We saw how the pitch crumbled by Day 5 and became very difficult to bat on. This deterioration could be even more exaggerated in this next match.

The weather is going to be hot and humid in Chennai like it almost always is. There is no threat of rain over the duration of the second test match. The pitch came under a lot of scrutiny after the first match but we did not think it was a poor surface. It played well for the first three days and then began to take spin.
The match lasted for five days and a result was achieved. Maybe the Indian contingent could request a surface that breaks up a bit quicker and brings the spinners into the game quicker. That can be dangerous, however, as we have seen that the Indian batsmen are not the most adept against the turning ball either.
A similar wicket to what we saw in the first Test with maybe a touch more assistance for the spinners is something that we are expecting for this match.
India was outplayed completely in the first match and will be hurting. This is where it is at its most dangerous. Expect India to hit back hard and make the improvements necessary. We think they will finally get their team selection right and bat batter to win the second match. England is the toughest opponent they have faced at home in recent years but they are far from unbeatable.
A poor match from Root is all that is going to take for England to really struggle against India.
Bet on India to win.
Rohit Sharma is a giant in Indian conditions. He had a bad match but he did not look out of form. He got two good deliveries and that can happen. We think there is a very good chance that he will come out firing and silence his detractors. Make some money while he does his job!
This is our favorite bet of the match and the one where we recommend going big. You are getting a 50% return on your stake if any batsman from either side gets past 100. Joe Root, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Ben Stokes. These are some of the best players in the world playing on a surface that is going to be good for batting for the first two days.
This is as close as you can come to a sure thing.
