IND vs NZ Match Prediction - Jan 18, 2023

2023 is an ODI World Cup year and that is why teams are giving this format a lot more importance than in previous seasons. India has just finished a 3-0 drubbing of Sri Lanka a few days back and will now focus on facing New Zealand who is also coming into this series with a 2-1 victory against Pakistan.

Currently, New Zealand is the number one ranked ODI team in the world but India, currently fourth, could take that number one position if it wins all three matches in this series. With the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, New Zealand will treat this series with a lot of importance to learn as much as it can about its players.

Match prediction and cricket betting tips for India vs New Zealand 1st ODI 2023. The match will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on the 18th of January 2023.

IND vs NZ Team Previews

India

India has now won its previous 19 ODI series at home with its last such loss coming in 2012-13 against Pakistan. That is a decade of dominance and shows just how difficult it is to be able to get past India in its own conditions. India has also won 26 out of the 35 ODI's it has played against New Zealand at home, losing just 8.

It is safe to say that India is the clear favorite heading into this contest and that is why the odds are a bit on the lower side.

There are a couple of questions that India has to answer ahead of this series, though. KL Rahul and Axar Patel, two players that have been very good for India recently in ODI cricket, are not a part of this series. The likely replacement would be Ishan Kishan and Washington Sundar but Kishan would have to bat out of his preferred opening position or India has to drop Shubman Gill.

Going by what we saw in the series against Sri Lanka, Rohit, Gill, and Virat will be the top-3 followed by a middle order of Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, and Ishan Kishan (flexible to change), and Washington Sundar as the all-rounder.

Mohammad Siraj picked up nine wickets in the previous series and will be India's go-to fast bowler once more. Mohammad Shami, Umran Malik, and Kuldeep Yadav could be the other bowlers starting this match. Kuldeep Yadav and Umran Malik had five wickets each in the 15 overs they each bowled during the previous series.

They will be tested more severely against the New Zealand lineup, though.

India Playing 11

Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami.

New Zealand

New Zealand will be without Kane Williamson and Tim Southee for this series as both players have taken a break from cricket. In their absence, Tom Latham will be leading the side. New Zealand will miss its senior players especially since Williamson was their highest run-scorer in Pakistan and Tim Southee the highest wicket-taker.

There is a lot of talent and depth in the New Zealand squad, though, and it should not be taken lightly.

Finn Allen and Devon Conway will open the batting with Henry Nicholls likely to come in at number three. Allen is ultra-aggressive and will take the game to the Indians. The flat batting tracks could actually favor him a lot more in India and we expect some fireworks from him. Devon Conway is also in good form with 153 runs in the series against Pakistan.

Tom Latham, Daryll Mitchell, and Glenn Phillips form an excellent middle-order as well with Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell to add depth. Phillips and Bracewell can play attacking match-changing innings down the order and will be players to keep an eye out for.

Overall, the New Zealand team is definitely impressive as can be seen from their ranking and recent performances. It is up against a juggernaut at home and missing its two best players is not going to help.

IND vs NZ Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is likely to want to bat first. There have been six ODI matches played at this venue with three of them being won by the team batting first and three by the chasing team. There does not appear to be a big advantage to winning the toss.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

No rain is forecast for match day and there is not a cloud in the sky! The sun will be out through the day and the temperatures should also be quite moderate. There is not much dew expected in this match. The pitch will probably be at its best to bat on first up. After that, it can become slightly slower and aid the spinners as the game goes on.

The average score in ODI's here is about 277 in the first inning. Looking at the ease with which teams are scoring 300-350 now, we think 277 would be slightly lesser than what teams are aiming for.

IND vs NZ Betting Tips

The New Zealand team is dangerous and should not be taken lightly but we think it is going to be hard for it to stop the Indians. Virat Kohli is back to his best, the bowling attack has a lot of wicket-taking potential in the middle-overs, and most of the leading players are in great touch. As the strongest team in the world in home conditions, you expect lower odds while betting on India and that is fair.
