About the Match
India started the T20 series against Australia with a win in the first match by 37 runs
; the two teams will now face-off in the 2nd T20 at Melbourne on 29th January. After losing the one-day series, the visitors have got some foothold now and will try to surge forward with another win on Friday, which will give them the series. On the other hand, Australia will not take this defeat lying low and will definitely leave no stone unturned to draw level with a better performance in the upcoming match. Both teams have the resources and determination to succeed and whichever side can keep a cool head above it shoulders in crunch situations, will be better placed to emerge victorious.
The pace attack consisting of Shaun Tait and Richardson couldn’t impress much and ended up giving too many runs to the Indians; Watson used his spin tactics to claim 2 wickets and Faulkner dismissed the well-set Raina while Boyce tried to stifle the run-flow of the opposition. However, the 188-run target proved to be too much for the Aussie batting line-up and they lost the match by 37 runs.
Finch did well with the bat as he scored 44 off 33 deliveries but the others failed to build strong partnerships against the Indian spinners. They have been in good form till now but this defeat will not go down well with the team, which believes in annihilating the opponents. With Smith, Watson, Chris Lynn, Travis Head and Matthew Wade in the middle-order, they will definitely need to come out all guns blazing to keep the series alive.
Warner and Finch have been smashing runs in the previous outings and look good to bounce back with better performance here; if the bowlers can dig deep to pull out some tricks against the hard-hitting Indian batsmen, then this match could surely go in their favour.
Batting first, the Indians put up a brilliant total of 188 runs facing the Aussie speedsters with ease; Virat Kohli showed immense grit and determination as he posted an unbeaten 90 while Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina contributed well with 31 and 41 runs respectively to build the innings. The batting line-up showed good technique in keeping the scoreboard ticking and with a solid middle order, they look poised to come back stronger in the upcoming match.
Defending 188, the spinners Ashwin and Jadeja along with the young Bumrah wreaked havoc on the hosts, stifling their run-flow with quick wickets; while the spinners took 4 wickets between them, Bumrah took 3 scalps and Ashish Nehra took his first international wicket since 2011. Hardik Pandya debuted with a horrific first over giving away 19 runs but he made up for it by taking 2 wickets and helping them win the match.
The all-rounders have done well in the opening match and they have definitely strengthened the morale of the team with the win; Dhoni and his men will have to dominate on the field yet again to keep the upper hand and win the series here.
India has taken a 1-0 lead and will have to keep the pressure on the hosts by repeating their winning performance with bat and ball; however, the Aussies, too, are a formidable side to reckon and they will want to draw level to keep the battle on for another day. Spinners played a key role in the first T20I and they are expected to do so in Melbourne as well. Keeping this in mind along with the batting form the visitors are in, they are going to emerge victorious yet again
