About the Match
Steve Smith and Australia put accusations of cheating behind them and went a long way in giving their team the chance to take an unbeatable lead in this test series. Will India be able to fight back tomorrow?
Day 2 Preview
The fact that Steve Smith is the best test batsman in the world is being confirmed with absolutely no room for any doubt. He led his team to a fantastic position thanks to his 19th
test century. He is unbeaten on 117 right now and is joined by Glenn Maxwell batting on 82.
Both of them will resume batting on Day 2 and look to extend their partnership of 159 runs as far as possible.
India has had a bad first day but there is no doubt that is surface is full of runs. Australia won an important toss and utilized the conditions well to reach 299 for 4 but their job is nowhere near complete yet.
We expect day 2 to be the best for batting on this pitch and Steve Smith to take full toll of the conditions on offer. Back him to get a score of 170 plus and for Maxwell to get as hundred as well.
Glenn Maxwell was an inspired choice as the replacement for Mitchell Marsh and has taken his chance with both hands. He could look to accelerate after his hundred and lose his wicket.
There is not too much of batting that Australia has after this partnership. Mathew Wade has been out of form, while the tail without Starc is considerably weakened. India will believe that they can run through the tail if they manage to get a wicket early.
There is not too much of assistance on offer for the spinners right now and they looked out of ideas by the end of the day. This is one pitch where Ashwin’s variations might be more effective than Jadeja’s unrelenting accuracy.
We think Ashwin is going to be the one to provide the breakthrough for India and take the most number of wickets in the first innings. Another big factor going ahead in this game is going to be the extent of Kohli’s injury. It does not seem like something that will affect his batting but if it does, that could be the death blow for this Indian team.
India will almost certainly bat tomorrow and their batsmen will need to play well to achieve parity with whatever the Australians score. Scoreboard pressure has got the better of them in the past and negotiating Lyon, O’Keefe, and company will be a much more difficult task with a big score behind them.
The in-form Lokesh Rahul will be crucial for India, however, we think he has been very fortunate in the previous innings so far. He is not someone that India can depend on. Murali Vijay and Pujara, on the other hand, are batsmen of pedigree that are our pick to score 50 plus runs.
The match is in favor of Australia right now but things can turn quickly. As of now, though, the chances of an Australian victory are much better than India’s.
