About the Match
South Africa defeated India in the opening T20 match of the series by 7 wickets to take a 1-0 lead; they will now go up against each other in the 2nd T20 match at Cuttack on 5th Oct. It was a shocking loss for the hosts as they were quite in control in the second half of the game, defending 199 runs put up by the batsmen, but the Proteans emerged victorious in a very convincing way with 2 balls to spare in the end. The two sides have equally talented players and experience to their advantage; the team that can keep a cool head above its shoulders will definitely be better placed to win the upcoming match on Monday.
Rohit Sharma was back to his elements as he smashed a brilliant century from just 66 deliveries; batting first, India was in the driver’s seat as Rohit and Kohli posted a 138-run stand for the 2nd wicket. However, once the pair was out, Dhoni, Raina and others like Rayudu and Patel failed to push the momentum ahead and ended up with 199 runs on the board.
The bowlers kept the pressure on the opponent till the 15th over as Ashwin dismissed AB de Villiers and debutant Aravind claimed the wicket of Faf du Plessis; Hashim Amla’s run-out in the 8th over gave India the advantage but they couldn’t restrict JP duminy from smashing sixes and fours all over the park. Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma failed to dismiss the opposition and gave away too many runs, failing to defend the total and win the match.
The batsmen must come out all guns blazing if batting first, and try to set a competitive total; Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Rayudu and other youngsters must put their best foot forward. The bowling combination needs a re-look and Dhoni must use the resources cleverly to outwit the Proteans.
JP Duminy’s match-winning 68 off just 34 balls helped the team take a lead in the 3-match T20 series against India; comprising of 7 sixes and a four, Duminy exhausted the Indian bowlers and steered his team to a 7-wicket victory. Earlier, Ab de Villiers ha set up a well-made half-century to start the chase positively along with Amla’s 36 runs; Behardien gave good support to Duminy by scoring 32 runs.
With the ball, Kyle Abbott was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 2-29 while Morris helped with the scalp of Raina. Brilliant fielding led to Dhawan’s run-out and the bowlers did well to restrict India to an achievable total of 199 runs.
They have great variety in their bowling with Imran Tahir leading with spin and Abbott looking good with the pace attack; Rabada, Lange and Duminy bring in depth to the squad. With a win the last match, they will be eager to continue with the wining momentum.
While the Proteans are confident of taking the series with another win here on Monday, we feel that the men in blue will get their act together and bounce back with a much-needed victory
