About the Match
After their collapse at Galle, India came back with a thumping 278-run victory in the 2nd test against Sri Lanka to tie the series at 1-1; it was a complete team effort by Virat Kohli and his men to win the crucial match after giving the hosts a tough time. Even though the islanders couldn’t give Sangakkara a winning adieu, they still have a perfect chance to take revenge and win the series when they meet India for the 3rd test at Colombo on 28th August. On the other hand, India has geared up for the final battle and will come out all guns blazing to register its first series win in Sri Lanka since 1993.
Kumar Sangakkara didn’t get a winning farewell unlike others who have retired in the last six years and it was a disappointing moment for the team as they lost the 2nd test; Dinesh Chandimal has been the most impressive batsman of the team whereas Herath yet again worked his magic with his left-arm spin to restrict the rivals.
The team has Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews and Karunarathne playing vital roles when it comes to batting and can keep the game on by scoring massive runs which could be hard to chase by the visitors. Dhammika Prasad took 6 wickets in total while Kaushal continues to provide support along with bowlers like Mathews and Chameera.
The team has many left handers in their batting line-up which turns out to be a disadvantage when facing the aggressive Indians; hence focusing more on strengthening the batting squad is important which can eventually help the team win the series in the upcoming match.
It was a quick comeback for the team even though it was facing increasingly frustrating injuries; with the loss in the first test, the team didn’t feel disheartened but threw the challenge back at the hosts to win the 2nd test match.
Rahul and Rahane have been outstanding with the bat as they built strong foundations with a century each; Kohli, Vijay and Rohit Sharma provided vital runs to put up a stiff 413-run target for the hosts. The pressure created by the bowlers was exceptional which contributed to the win; Ashwin took his 11th five wicket haul and Amit Mishra continues to spin his magic and provide the required support with the ball.
Saha and Murali Vijay are out of the squad due to injury and this means a change in the team by bringing in players like Karun Nair and Naman Ojha. Ajinkya could bat at No. 3, 5, or 6 while Rohit is strong at No. 3; the team will try to stick to the same batting line-up. Swapping the bowlers at crucial moments could be a good strategy; there is versatility in the batting order and this factor will be important to win the upcoming test match.
It’s a crucial match for both the teams as the series depends on it; Sri Lanka is getting ready to counterattack and are motivated to win the match for Sangakkara. India lost both its openers due to injuries but still managed to emerge victorious in the 2nd test and will look forward to lift the trophy with a win here.
