About the Match
It will be a do or die game for India as they take on Sri Lanka in final league game of the tournament. This match would be played just a day after conclusion of West Indies and Sri Lanka game that is on July 9th, 2013 at Port of Spain. India will be going into this match knowing that it might well be their last game in this tour. India has met Sri Lanka many times in recent past, but this game will be different in the sense that the Indians will be under pressure to live up to the expectations of their fans. Sri Lanka posted a mammoth victory over India in the last game and will be looking to repeat that to bring some delight to their fans.
India had a bad start to the tournament as they lost both of their first two games. India bounced back in the tournament by registering a bonus point win over the hosts in their last game. In the first two games, India’s biggest trouble was failure of their batting which appear to be resolved in last game as both openers scored runs and provided India with a solid start. It was Virat Kohli’s efforts to propel India to a total beyond the reach of potent West Indies lineup. Comeback of Bhuwneshwar Kumar proved to be just the tonic Indian bowlers needed as West Indies was restricted to a small total to allow India a bonus point. With the kind of form India is in, after winning Champions Trophy and now defeating West Indies, it would be a colossal task for Sri Lanka to beat India.
Sri Lanka has had a mixed tournament so far as they’ve won and lost games by huge margins respectively. A win would seal the semifinal spot whereas they’ll fly home if they lose this one. Sangakkara has been in tremendous form as he played a good innings to drag his team out of the trouble in last game. Injury of Kulasekara has given them a setback and their bowling now appears to be a little less powerful. The form of Tharanga, Jayawardene has proved to be blessing in disguise after Dilshan was ruled out of the series. Mathews hitting abilities and skills with the ball can come in pretty handy. Sri Lanka is a well-balanced team on paper, and as it happened on the other day, they can outplay any side in the world.
This is the last group game and the race to the final is still alive. Sri Lanka won their last game against West Indies to qualify for the finals thanks to their better net run rate. India would have to win this game by a big margin to qualify for the finals and knock hosts out. Can India beat Sri Lanka to stay alive in the competition? There’ve been many encounters between the two sides and it will be a virtual semifinal for India. Due to excellent batting and good bowling, I think India will beat Sri Lanka in this important fixture.

The major factor responsible India’s recent is their opening pair and much credit goes to Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawan has been in tremendous touch since his return to the international scene. He played a brilliant knock in the last match and looked in supreme form. Being an opener, he has the opportunity to face as many deliveries as any one as else and considering his form, it won’t be surprising if he tops India’s batting chart once again.
