About the Match
Wankhede stadium is bustling with a lot of action, with the 2nd test match between the two nations being the farewell match for the Great Sachin Tendulkar; the legend and role model for millions of youngsters across India and the World. The 1st test at Kolkata finished in less than 3 days; India defeating West Indies by a huge margin – an innings and 51 runs thus taking the lead 1-0 in this test series. The upcoming match is sure to be an even more exciting one as a nation prays for a memorable performance by the Little Master.
Sachin Tendulkar is playing his last test match, his 200th test, in front of his home crowd- at the Wankhede stadium. Though he didn’t score many runs in the 1st test, his every action on the ground was appreciated by the crowd and when he took a wicket to break the partnership of Chanderpaul and Shilingford; the crowd went berserk. Shami had a dream debut as he accounted for 4 important wickets in the first innings with his pace bowling, 3 of them out clean bowled. Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar and Ojha supported him well and the team gave good support with some brilliant fielding. While batting, India struggled at 83 for 5; however, Rohit, playing his 1st test match, stabilized the innings along with Dhoni. Later on, Rohit and Ashwin’s record 7th wicket partnership of 275 runs, where both batsmen scored centuries, shook the confidence of the visitors as India built an enviable total of 453 runs. Shami struck again to take 5 wickets and Ashwin claimed another 3, demolishing the West Indian team for 168 runs in just less than 2 sessions on the 3rd day. This massive win has been a wonderful gift by the team to Sachin in his penultimate test match and Team India is expected to repeat their brilliant performance in the 2nd test as they bid farewell to the icon of Indian cricket.
The main reason for the team’s inept batting display is that they couldn’t adjust to the test match requirements and succumbed to reckless batting in both the innings. Against a spirited Shami and other Indian bowlers, they could not hold their nerve and failed to build good partnerships; hence collapsing for a meager total in the 1st innings and later batting 2nd, did not have an iota of plan to play for more than 2 days to save the test. The tail proved too long and couldn’t support the efforts of Chanderpaul. West Indies needs to analyze their weaknesses and have a better strategy for the 2nd test to tackle the all-round display of their opponents.
West Indies have the resources to strike back and level the series but may not be able to adjust to the test match conditions so quickly. India is hungry for a series win especially when the match is of so much importance to their favorite team mate. The visitors will put up a tougher fight here and the match may not fold up as quickly as it did in the 1st test; but the result may not be quite different as Team India go in clearly as favorites.
India, 1.50 @ William Hill
Both in tests and limited overs Cricket, India is known for its strong batting lineup. Murli Vijay is not in best of his touches and he would be under tremendous pressure in this game. Despite having a strong batting lineup, their opening pair seems little shaky. I think they’d lose their first wicket before getting to 36.
