About the Match
India yet again dominated Zimbabwe in the first T20 match and won it handsomely by 54 runs to take 1-0 series lead; they will now face off in the 2nd and final T20 match on 19th July at Harare. The hosts have already lost the ODI series against the men in blue and will be eager to redeem themselves with a win here. India on the other hand continues to put up all-round efforts and look good to take the T20 series as well with a win on Sunday; it needs to be seen if the hosts can come back stronger and pull off a surprise victory to level the T20 series.
Chasing 179 runs, the batting line-up once again failed to get the big runs or build partnerships; the batsmen fell easy prey to the Indian spin bowlers and could only reach 124 runs. Although Masakadza and Chibhabha put up a 55-run opening stand, the others down the order failed to impress and succumbed to pressure.
The bowlers performed fairly well, picking up 2 wickets before the 10th over but they couldn’t restrict the run-flow; although Mpofu claimed 3-33 and Cremer was impressive taking 1 wicket with an economy of only 5 runs per over, they couldn’t combine well to pressurize the Indians. They need to be tactful in their approach against the visitors, who have mastered the art of setting up challenging totals or chasing one with ease.
The team’s morale is down but they have shown glimpses of bravado in both batting and bowling; they will need to pick themselves up and come back stronger to give their fans something to cheer about at the end of the series here.
The Indian top order combined their skills to build a strong foundation, batting first in today’s contest; while Rahane and Vijay posted a 66-run opening stand, Uthappa added a well-made unbeaten 39 runs to keep the scoreboard ticking. Binny and Pandey came good with the bat and took the total to 178 runs, which the bowlers defended successfully.
Axar Patel’s 3-17 earned him the player of the match award and he has performed consistently throughout the series, picking up regular wickets; Binny, Kumar and Mohit Sharma stifled the opposition with the run-flow while Harbhajan Singh struck at the right time to remove two top order batsmen. The bowling unit has a good mix of pace and spin, who can combine well to restrict the Zimbabwean batsmen and stun them with quick wickets.
They have done exceptionally well as a team, with young talent and experienced players who don’t shy away from challenges; having won the ODI series and the first T20 match, they are excited to wrap up the tour with a complete whitewash here.
Although Zimbabwe has brilliant players who can be match-winners, they lack in confidence and determination to turn a favorable position into victory; India with a positive mind set and in-form players definitely go in as clear favorites to win the next match and take the series
