South Africa women thumped India women 4-1 to win the ODI series with ease. It was a commanding performance from a team that tends to suffer against spin. This time, however, it was ready with an appropriate riposte.
Now, the action shifts to the T20 format. This is where both India and South Africa have had more success in recent years and so the competition might be even more fierce. The teams will be playing three T20 internationals in four days and so getting off to a winning start is quite important.
Can India recover in the shortest format and win against South Africa or will the tourists continue to boss the hosts around?
India Women vs South Africa Women 1st T20 is going to be played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on the 20th of March 2021.
India Women have a difficult task ahead of them. They are going to be taking on a confident South Africa side that seems to have all the tools needed to succeed on this tour. However, India is a pretty different team in the T20 format than it is in the ODI’s.
Players like Shafali Verma are going to take the attack to the South Africans, no matter what, and We also think Harmanpreet Kaur’s captaincy is more new-age than Mthali Raj’s. There is no doubt that the batting on the Indian team looks a bit thin, however.
Shafali Verma is mercurial and will either score quickly or get out trying. There is no in-between with her and the high-risk approach is always risky. Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur have to find a way to score runs consistently as the team really depends on these two.
Jemimah Rodriguez and Deepti Sharma are the other two players that could get a place in the batting unit for the first match.
The lack of depth is obvious and India may find it difficult to recover from early losses.
The bowling is going to be spin-heavy with Poonam Yadav and Radha Yadav the likely staters. Arundhati Reddy, Rajeshwari Gaekwad, and maybe Mansi Joshi could all find a place in the team as well.
Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Harleen Deol, Nuzhat Parween, Simran Bahadur, Poonam Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Arundhati Reddy.
Everything seems to be coming together for South Africa on this tour so far and it will come into the T20 series confident of success. Lizelle Lee has managed to remain consistent without compromising her aggressive approach and that is hard to do. She will be the biggest threat to the Indian bowlers once more.
South Africa has a number of other good batters, though. Laura Woilvaardt, Mignon du Preez, Nadine de Klerk, Marizanne Kapp, and Sune Luus can all bat very well. In the case of the last three names, they can all contribute handily with the ball as well.
The abundance of all-rounders adds a lot of versatility to the South African T20 lineup. The real thrust of taking wickets is going to come from Shabnim Ismail, Ayabonga Khaka, and possibly Tumi Sekhukhune.
Sinalo Jafta, Lizelle Lee, Mignon du Preez, Laura Wolvaardt, Lara Goodall, Sune Luus, Nadine de Klerk, Anne Bosch, Shabnim Ismail, Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba.
The team that wins the toss is likely to want to bowl first. We don’t think there is going to be any major change in the wicket, however, the dew might play a role and make chasing easier.

The weather conditions in Lucknow are pretty good and there is no threat of rain right now. As far as the pitch goes, we expect the surface to be pretty flat with not much bounce or pace in it. It will offer some turn but nothing extravagant in that area either.
A score of around 140-150 should be seen as par batting first.
India should be able to put up a better fight in this match, however, it is difficult to look past the success of the South Africans in the ODI series. The visitors have a strong batting lineup with several players in top-form and its bowling lineup is very good as well. India’s biggest strength has been its spin bowling, something that South Africa has faced with ease on this tour.
Bet on South Africa Women to win.
There are a lot of very good batters in this match on both sides and the conditions are expected to pretty in-favor of the batters as well. We don’t think it is hard to imagine just one of the players to go and get a fifty. The odds are not the best but this is what we call a banker bet. It is almost always going to come through.
This is one area in which India could get a leg-up on South Africa thanks to the presence of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. These are two of its best players and if India has to make an impact, these two will need to score. This is why this bet can be an effective hedge for this match as well.
