India Women

The India Women ended up as the runners-up in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup as they were defeated by Australia in the finals. However, they start this edition as one of the favorites to lift the trophy.

India Women started their campaign on a positive note, as they defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 7 wickets in the opening game. Asked to bowl first, the bowlers couldn’t rein in the Pakistan batters as they gave away 149 runs in 20 overs.

Radha Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 2 wickets for just 21 runs. In the second innings, despite the absence of Smriti Mandhana, the top-order put up an inspiring performance to chase down the target with 6 wickets in hand. Jemimah Rodrigues scored an unbeaten half-century and was well-supported by Richa Ghosh and Shafali Verma.

Going forward, India will need to work on its fielding as they have leaked runs that could have been easily avoided. Another thing that the team will need to work on is death bowling. They leaked 58 runs in the last 5 overs against Pakistan and that could have cost them dearly if it had not been a good performance by the batters. 

West Indies Women

The woes for the West Indies Women’s team continued as they lost their opening match against the rampant England Women’s team. Drawn in a group containing teams like India, England, and Pakistan, West Indies will have to win this match in order to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Despite the loss, the West Indies Women will take some positives from the last match. They put up a good opening stand of 47 in the first 6 overs to build a solid foundation. Stafanie Taylor made a comeback after a long absence from the team and appeared a bit rusty as she managed to score just 3 runs from 15 deliveries.

Hayley Mattews and Shemaine Campbelle looked to be in good touch as they scored 42 and 34 runs respectively. Chinelle Henry too was playing well in the middle order but was unlucky to be run out. West Indies will need to improve on their bowling as even a decent total of 135 was easily chased down by then England Women batters.

Except for Afy Fletcher and Shakera Selman, the other bowlers were way more expensive. While winning here is quite unlikely, the West Indies Women will hope to make it difficult for India to win.
