About the Match
United is presently in the third place with 6 points and will take on Qalandars, who are at the bottom of the table with only 4 points, for the last league match of the series on 17th February at Dubai. The Qalandars who had started their campaign poorly, couldn’t win more than two matches so far and they are in a dire need for a win here; on the other hand, United had a mixed run and they have bounced back with a win recently against Kings to climb to the third place and will leave no stone unturned to reserve a place in the qualifiers.
They won the last match against Kings by 5 wickets after successfully chasing down 129 runs; the bowlers set up the foundation for the victory as they stifled the opposition thanks to a 2-wicket haul by Imran Khalid and Sami, Russell and Mahmood providing regular breakthroughs. Misbah-ul-Haq, Asif Ali and Khalid Latif scored 30+ runs each to take the team safely home.
When they met Qalandars earlier in the series, they had emerged victorious defeating the opponents by 8 wickets with 25 balls remaining; Shane Watson and Sharjeel Khan had posted 79 runs each to successfully chase down 167 runs.
They have time and again proven themselves with an all-round performance with bat and ball; if they can continue to build strong partnerships whether batting first or during chase, then this team could be a formidable force to reckon with.
They snatched victory from table toppers Zalmi in their last outing as they won the match in a close finish by 4 runs after successfully defending 164 runs thanks to Cooper and Delport, who took 3 wickets each to help them win the second match of the season. Earlier, Delport had posted a brilliant 78 off 61 while Umar Akmal posted an unbeaten 52 to give the team a solid total.
Their earlier performances have been not up to the mark and they must definitely must pull up their socks to climb up the points table. The other match they won was against Gladiators in a superb show of grit and skills as Umar Akmal top scored with a blazing 93 off just 40 deliveries to take the total to 194, which the bowlers easily defended as Gohar and Mendis demolished the opposition.
They have good talent and experienced players and if they can focus on building a strong foundation if batting first, then they surely can make a comeback with another win here.
With this being the last league match, both sides will try to come out all guns blazing in order to improve their standings on the table. Although Islamabad United has performed well consistently to reach the third place, we feel that Qalandars will put their best foot forward to avenge their previous defeat and keep their hopes alive with a much-needed win here on Wednesday
