About the Match
City Kaitak is close to making it to the finals against Cantons, and will try to get ahead of the competition by winning the upcoming match against Island United at Mong Kok on 12th March. They defeated Jaguars by 5 wickets recently after annihilating Gladiators in the previous match by 6 wickets. Island United, on the other hand, has suffered two consecutive losses against Cantons and Gladiators and are desperate for a face-saving win here on Sunday. It needs to be seen if Kaitak can overcome the challenge from United and make it through.
Spinner Saeed Ajmal put up a stupendous show as he took 4-29 against Cantons in the last match; speedster Tanwir Afzal also finished with 2 wickets in an economical spell and helped contain the opponents to 168. However, the batting line-up crumbled under pressure and barring Ian Bell, who scored a well-made 59 and good contribution by Munsey, the others gave up without a fight to lose the match by a massive 44 runs.
Against Gladiators, captain Misbah-ul-Haq posted an unbeaten 84 off 50 to take the total to 177, with help from Atkinson and Pascoe; but the bowlers found it difficult to stifle the opposition’s chase, losing the match by 8 wickets. Spinner Badree and speedster Afzal took a wicket each while Ajmal cleverly restricted the Gladiators in their run-flow but the others couldn’t get the breakthroughs.
They have won only one game against Jaguars till now, and have lost the race to the final; however, they have a good mix of experience and young talent to finish off the series with a win here.
Chasing a 194-run target against Jaguars, Coetzer and Pooran smashed sixes and fours to steer the team across the finish line with almost 3 overs to spare; while Coetzer posted a well-made 58, Pooran made 48 from just 19 balls. Waqas Barkat and Dilshan made useful contributions as well while Chris Jordan showcased his all-rounder skills yet again as he put up an unbeaten 21 off 7, helping the team win by 5 wickets. Speedsters Jordan and Emrit had taken a wicket each earlier while spinner Nadeem Ahmed finished with 2 scalps but they had to face a stiff target.
The experienced bowlers Jordan and Emrit had done well in the previous match against Gladiators by bowling economically and taking 5 wickets between them. Others like Aizaz Khan, Buckley, Dilshan and Ahmed provide regular breakthroughs and they restricted the opponents to 155. Dilshan impressed with the bat with 38 off 29 while Aizaz Khan pitched in with 36 runs; Coetzer, Harte and Jordan made useful contributions and ensured to get home to victory by 6 wickets.
They have done well to win two consecutive games and are definitely a formidable force to reckon with; the all-rounders are doing well with bat and ball, and they could be a front runner here.
City Kaitak comes here at the back of two wins and are a confident lot; Island United, on the other hand, is low on morale but could put up a fierce fight. The match could swing either way, but we feel Kaitak in its determination to make it to the finals, is better placed to win on Sunday.
