The first few matches of the Pakistan Super League are going to be played in Karachi and while that may be seen as a slight advantage for certain teams, we don’t think any Pakistani is really going to be unaware of the conditions.
We are looking at Islamabad United and the Multan Sultans in this match, This is going to be the first match for the two teams who had a pretty contrasting PSL 2020. The Multan Sultans basically dominated the league stage before COVID-19 ended their title run while Islamabad United struggled and did not make the playoffs at all.
It will be interesting to see how the teams shape up at the start of PSL 2021.
Islamabad United vs Multan Sultans PSL 2021 is going to be played at the National Stadium, Karachi on the 21st of February 2021.
Islamabad United has had to name three replacements from its original squad as Colin Munro, Chris Jordan, and Reece Topley are not going to be available. Fawad Ahmed, Ali Khan, and Paul Stirling are the players that have been chosen as their replacements.
We are a bit concerned about the balance of this team.
Islamabad United has a couple of very good hitters at the top of the order in Alex Hales and Phil Salt. Both of them, however, a lot to prove in subcontinent conditions. We know Alex Hales would want to use the PSL as a possible route to make his case for the T20 World Cup and so will have some extra motivation to do well.
They could struggle as the pitches start to slow up and so the other batsmen will need to step up.
Asif Ali, Hussain Talat, and Iftikhar Ahmed are the other three Pakistani batsmen in the side. We don’t really rate any one of them highly even though they have played one or two good knocks each in the past.
Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf add depth and balance to the side but they often end up playing out of position to cover for the weaknesses in their team.
Hasan Ali and Mouhammad Musa will lead the bowling alongside Zafar Gohar, Fawad Ahmed, and perhaps, Ali Khan.
A decent bowling attack but the overall balance of the team looks a bit skewed with too many underperforming players in key positions.
Philip Salt, AD Hales, Hussain Talat, Asif Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Lewis Gregory, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Zafar Gohar.
The Multan Sultans have a new captain for PSL 2021. They have appointed Mohammad Rizwan as the captain, a good move especially when he is in the batting form of his life. Rizwan has a very decent batting lineup around him and as we have said, that is a huge asset to have in the PSL.
Chris Lynn, James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, Sohaib Maqsood, and Khushdil Shah are all a part of the squad and likely to find a place in the starting eleven. It may be a bit embarrassing for the team management but their captain of the previous season, Shan Masood, is going to be under pressure and may not be picked at all.
With Shahid Afridi and Carlos Brathwaite in the lineup as well, the batting depth of the Multan Sultans is far better than what Islamabad United has.
Among the bowlers, Usman Qadir and Imran Tahir could make a deadly spin combination. In fact, Tahir could struggle to get in the team at all depending on the team combination. Sohail Tanvir, Sohail Khan, and Imran Khan are the other bowlers likely to get a game.
If you count the all-rounders, there are enough options for the Multan Sultans to always be in the game.
We like the Multan Sultans ahead of the start of the PSL even though they have been given the longest odds of winning the title.
Mohammad Rizwan, Chris Lynn, James Vince, Sohaib Maqsood, Rilee Rossouw, Khushdil Shah, SMSK Afridi, Carlos Brathwaite, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Umar, Sohaibullah.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first. Around 80% of the T20 matches in Karachi have been won by the chasing team and so winning the toss is a significant advantage. Be sure to factor that into your PSL cricket bets before you press the confirm button!

The conditions in Karachi are going to be good for batting. The pitch will be flat and without a lot of pace or bounce. That being said, the outfield is always lightning-quick and batsmen will be able to get full value for their shots. The wrist-spinners will get some help from the surface as the match progresses.
A score of around 165-170 should be seen as par batting first.

We think Islamabad United is going to struggle in PSL 2021. It has a couple of match-winners that will help it cause the odd upset but a sustained run of success looks difficult. The Multan Sultans have a stronger batting lineup, an excellent bowling attack with a lot of options, and they are being led by the man of the moment in Pakistani cricket.
Bet on the Multan Sultans to win.
This is as close as you can come to a sure thing. We think the conditions of the match, as well as the quality of players on both sides, make this a banker bet. Play it as a single bet to get a decent 20% return or make it a part of a multiple bet to increase your odds.
The quality of power-hitting in the Multan Sultans lineup is just far beyond what Islamabad Unite has. The only risk to this bet is Alex Hales. Considering the quality of spin that the Sultans have, we think Alex Hales is not going to be a factor in this match.
