Defending champions, Islamabad United, suffered their first loss of PSL 2019 in their previous match against the Multan Sultans. A poor batting performance cost them the match and now they have a very short turnaround time before their match against the Quetta Gladiators.
A very confident victory for the Quetta Gladiators against Peshawar Zalmi was the ideal start for the Quetta Gladiators. A brilliant inning from Umar Akmal ensured that the Quetta Gladiators start with a win and can build from here.
These are the two most successful teams in the history of the PSL and their first match in PSL 2019 could be an important one if history is anything to go by.
Islamabad United would be very disappointed at the manner of their loss against the Multan Sultans. Luke Ronchi played a blazing inning of 51 from 33 balls but none of the other batsmen contributed. Cameron Delport’s loss for a duck was perhaps the most important wicket for Islamabad United.
The signs are not looking very good for Islamabad United on the evidence of the first two matches they have played. It took a very special performance from Faheem Ashraf to be able to win the first match and they were thrashed comprehensively by the Multan Sultans in their second one.
The batting is a little shaky and the collapse we saw in the previous match is not the last such performance we will see form Islamabad United. We think that Cameron Delport is going to be the lynchpin of the Islamabad United batting in PSL 2019.
He was one of the highest scorers in the Bangladesh Premier League and played a good hand in the first match too.
Rizwan Hussain, Philip Salt, and Hussain Talat are all batting in the top order for Islamabad United and we think that may be leaving a few too many raw players to set the stage. On most occasions where Cameron Delport or Luke Ronchi are going to get out early, Islamabad United is going to struggle for runs.
The bowling for Islamabad United was a little strange. Four out of the five bowlers had a good match. Samit Patel, Faheem Ashraf, Shadab Khan, and Mohammad Sami took wickets and kept the runs scoring in check. The fifth bowler, though, went for 43 runs in his 3.4 overs.
That bowler was Waqas Maqsood and we think he is going to struggle to make it to the playing eleven in this upcoming match.
Luke Ronchi, Rizwan Hussain, C Delport, Hussain Talat, Asif Ali, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, WD Parnell, Mohammad Sami, Rumman Raees, SR Patel.
Ahmed Shahzad was out the first ball for the Quetta Gladiators in the previous match and we don’t think that was a bad thing at all. He was not able to eat up too many deliveries and allowed the better batsmen to face the maximum possible balls.
A lineup which boasts of players Shane Watson, Rilee Rossow, Umar Akmal, and Sarfaraz Ahmed is not going to be short of runs on too many occasions. Shane Watson scored just 19 runs in his last outing but showed some very good signs. He was timing the ball well, clearing the boundaries, and picking the spinners well.
Shane Watson may not have played international cricket for quite some time now but he is still very good against spin. That is the reason why he has so much success in the PSL and in the IPL. He is a little suspect against genuine pace but the slow pitches in the UAE help him out there as well.
He is the player that we are going with to watch out for in this match.
Rilee Rossow was the highest scorer of the Bangladesh Premier League. He is in the prime of his career and could light up PSL 2019 as well. The addition of Umar Akmal seems to have been a brilliant one for the Quetta Gladiators.
The Akmal brothers (Umar and Kamran) are PSL legends. Umar Akmal showed just why the entire nation of Pakistan is so upset that he has not achieved more at the international level. His inning of 75 was sublime and promises great things for him this season.
The bowling attack is a little bit weak when compared to some other sides in the PSL but it is still a very good attack. In fact, that is one of the hallmarks of the PSL. Almost all teams have good bowling attacks.
Sohail Tanvir, Fawad Ahmed, Mohammad Irfan Jr., Mohammad Nawaz, and Ghulam Mudassar were responsible for keeping Peshawar Zalmi in check in the last match and will be looking to do the same against Islamabad United as well.
Sarfraz Ahmed, Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Akmal, Dwayne Smith, Rilee Rossouw, Mohammad Nawaz, SR Watson, Ghulam Mudassar, S Tanvir, M Irfan Jnr, Fawad Ahmed.
The team winning the toss is likely going to want to bat first

The PSL 2019 match between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators is going to be played at the Dubai International Stadium, Dubai. The weather is going to be perfect for cricket with next to no chance of rain predicted.
The pitch at the Dubai stadium has been quite good for batting and allowed some big scores to be reached. Teams need to be careful of not being ultra conservative if they bat first because they could end up falling short of a defendable total.
Islamabad United has looked a bit shaky in the first two matches it has played. Faheem Ashraf is, perhaps, the one player that has stood out in these two matches and could be given a more central role. Quetta Gladiators have played just one match but we love the look of their strong batting lineup and think they should be able to win this match as well thanks to their superior batting strength.
Back the Quetta Gladiators to win.
