About the Match
Barbados Tridents defeated the reigning champions Jamaica Tallawahs in their opening match by 12 runs to garner two points that’s taken them to the second position; the two teams will meet again on 6th August at Florida for the 5th match of the league. As the competition gets heated, we will surely see more fireworks from the teams; on Sunday night, fans could see Tallawahs putting up a better performance to redeem themselves. Chasing 143 seemed easy as Lendl Simmons started the innings strongly with a well-made 53; however, wicketkeeper and captain Kumar Sangakkara didn’t deliver with the bat, getting out for a duck right in the 2nd over. The quick dismissals of Shakib-Al-Hasan and Rovman Powell led to a middle-order collapse, which they failed to recover from despite a good show by Andre McCarthy, who posted 22 runs. They lost the match by 12 runs and the good efforts of the bowlers went in vain.
Earlier, fast-bowlers Kesrick Williams and Krishmar Santokie took 2 wickets each while spinner Imad Wasim provided 2 crucial breakthroughs in the 14th over, helping to restrict the opponents to 142. The bowling department has others like Mohammad Sami and all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan, who contributed with one wicket.
The batting unit has strong players like Simmons, Sangakkara, Shakib-Al-Hasan, Andre McCarthy, Jonathan Foo and Rovman Powell, who will have to build solid partnerships and keep the scoreboard ticking if they want to make a comeback here.
Dwayne Smith and Shoaib Malik performed well with the bat, scoring 28 and 33 runs respectively; however, others like Kane Williamson, Nicholas Pooran, captain and experienced batsman Kieron Pollard and Christopher Barnwell couldn’t impress much. Bowlers Akeal Hossain and Wayne Parnell then combined well together to score 20+ runs each from the lower-order and took the total to 142.
The bowlers had a tough task to defend the humble total but they delivered perfectly to help win the match by 12 runs. Spinner Akeal Hossain claimed 2-24 while speedsters Ravi Rampaul, Wahab Riaz and Imran Khan provided one breakthrough each at vital junctures to stifle the opposition. Shoaib Malik too did well with his spin variation and along with Wayne Parnell adds depth to the attack.
