About the Match
The stage is all set for Jamaica Tallawahs and T&T Red Steel to face off yet again on Aug 18 at Kingston Grounds. Hosts Jamaica has 6 points on the table just ahead of Hawksbills, with two matches to go. If they lose today against Tridents and Hawksbills win their contest, then the Tallawahs must win this match against T&T Red Steel to keep their semi-final hopes alive. On the other hand, T&T Red Steel has only 4 points and needs a win in both their matches; one against the Zouks and the other against the Tallawahs to make it to the semi-finals. The Hosts will play to secure a place in the final-four, whereas for Team T&T this is a do or die scenario. It will surely be an interesting contest.
Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel:
T&T Red Steel will look to avenge their earlier humiliating defeat against the hosts. With the pressure mounting, Dwayne Bravo has a tough job at hand when he picks his team. They have good bowling options, but Bravo needs to make some hard decisions this time around. Having rightfully placed his faith in Delorn Johnson, who successfully defended 19 off the last over in the match against the Hawksbills; Bravo has to once again tactfully implement his strategies. Though openers Barath and Ross Taylor posted a 62-run 2nd wicket partnership against the Tallawahs previously, the team failed to recover from their middle-order collapse barring some heroic efforts from the captain and Nicholas Pooran, which sadly went in vain. The win against the Hawksbills has given them the much needed morale boost and it could be a turnaround for them.
In their earlier encounter with the visitors, the Tallawahs saw superior performances by Hyatt and Philander who smashed 41 runs off 14 balls, after losing wickets earlier on. The two batsmen complemented each other and steered the course for a Jamaican win. The batting prowess of Russell & Gayle failed to emerge but they contributed by taking wickets steadily. With the loss against the Amazon Warriors still haunting their side, the Jamaicans need to keep a steady lead and avoid losing wickets early on. Bowlers Philander, Russell and Bernard who are in great form have to take charge and win this crucial match for their team.
The Jamaican fans are hungry for a team win and the pressure on the Tallawahs is huge at the home ground. With the batsmen and bowlers giving all-round performances, there’s absolutely no room for error and it would be their match to lose. On the other hand, T&T Red Steel have a lot to prove to themselves and bounce back into the series with a much needed victory. The results of today’s matches will definitely affect their team strategies and only time will tell who will emerge victorious. My view is slightly tilted towards the home team, Jamaican Tallawahs who have performed better than their opponents in the tournament so far and they are expected to win this all-important encounter.
