About the Match
A last-ball astonishing victory by Red Steel against the Warriors has taken the team to the second position with 6 points from 4 matches played, just behind the Tallawahs, who have 6 points from 3 matches played and a superior NRR of +0.924; the top two teams Red Steel and Tallawahs face each other on 26th July at Port of Spain for the 13th match of the CPL 2014. This is the first time the two sides are meeting and it surely will be a great match, especially after the recent heroics from these teams in winning close contests against their respective opponents.
Trinidad & Tobago Red Steels
A six from the last ball of the match, and Darren Bravo sealed the victory for his team against Amazon Warriors in a thrilling contest, winning by 4 wickets. Earlier Badree was superb with his spell of 3-13 from his 4 overs, dismissing Guptill and hafeez early in the innings and then coming back to remove the hard-hitting Simmons. But with Dwayne Bravo proving costly and the others, except Edwards, not lucky with the wickets, the batsmen had to chase a tall target of 180 runs. It was shocking performance by the top order as Taylor, Kevin O’Brien and Lewis were out with only 13 runs on board; the Bravo brothers came to the rescue as they put up a 131-run stand for the 4th wicket to steer the game in their favour with Darren posting an excellent 69 off 49 balls while his brother contributed 67 runs from 42 deliveries. In the earlier match against Hawksbills, it was Taylor and Brien’s partnership that took the team home safely but the duo failed to repeat the performance here. The bowlers also need to be more consistent in their attack and try to contain the opposition in the run-flow with more discipline.
Reigning supreme on the points table, this team has the might of Gayle, Voges and Walton, who have been in good form with the bat, and the likes of Daniel Vettori, who is dreaded by the opponents for stifling the run-flow and getting the required breaks with the ball. It was a tough feat to defend 148 runs against the Warriors, but Theron and Miller came good by taking a wicket each and Vettori giving away only 15 runs from his 4 over spell; in the earlier match too, these two bowlers had performed well restricting the run-flow and providing good support to the others. On the batting front, Gayle is in top form, as he got a steady 37 off 31 balls against Hawksbills and posting 111 runs against the Zouks earlier. Walton too is giving a good start to the innings, scoring 53 off 42 deliveries in the last match and partnering with Voges, who posted 48 runs off 43 balls, to provide a solid foundation. The players are confident in any kind of situation, whether batting first to set a target or chasing successfully to win matches; however, they must be cautious not to become complacent and give their best in the upcoming matches too.
Both teams are equally matched in terms of talent and determination to succeed, and hence this will be a tough competition on Saturday. Though Red Steel will definitely come out all guns blazing, the combined effort of the Tallawahs players is likely to take them through to a win again.
