Jaffna Kings

The Kings have won the Championship in both editions of the League so far and are strong contenders to win it for the third consecutive time.

After losing their fixture against the Kandy Falcons, the Jaffna Kings came back strongly in their latest match, defeating the Galle Gladiators by 16 runs. Opting to bat first, the Kings put up a fighting total of 170-8 in their quota of 20 overs thanks to some excellent batting by the top order.

Avishka Fernando and Sadeera Samarawickrama were once again among the runs but it was Afif Hossain who was playing his first match of the season, who stole the show by scoring a blazing half-century. The bowlers did a good job of defending the total thanks to some excellent bowling by Binura Fernando and Maheesh Theekshana, who took 4 wickets between them.

The middle-order batsmen, especially James Fuller and Thisara Perera haven’t been in the best of forms this season and that might be a bit of a concern for the Kings should the top order fail to fire. 

Colombo Stars

The Colombo Stars haven’t been consistent this season, and that has affected its standing in the points table. With just 3 wins to show from its 7 fixtures so far, the Stars are 3rd placed on the table. While it will still be moving to the knockouts irrespective of the result of this match, the Stars will still be hoping to win this match to gain some confidence.

The Stars were asked to bat first in their latest game by the Kandy Falcons, and they were bundled out for just 106 runs. The scoreline could have been much worse had it not been for a gritty knock of 41 runs by Angelo Matthews.

The target was nearly not enough for the strong batting line-up of the Falcons, who sailed through at the expense of just 1 wicket. Dinesh Chandimal and Matthews have been the only two batsmen who have shown some sort of consistency with their batting. Niroshan Dickwella, Ravi Bopara, and Charith Asalanka have got starts but haven’t played to their full potential.

A look at the bowling reveals a similar story of inconsistencies as none of the bowlers have been able to apply pressure on the opposition batsmen. Going by their current form, the Stars will find it pretty difficult to reach the Finals.
