The Jaffna Kings are all set to defend their title as they face Galle Gladiators in the opening match of the latest season of Lanka Premier League which begins on Tuesday.
Jaffna and Galle are two of the strongest teams in the tournament and have produced quite a few exciting matches in the past. Given the bench strength of both teams, we can expect another cracking contest in the season opener.

Jaffna Kings
The Kings are undeniably the best team in the League today. They have won both the seasons played so far and would like to continue to build upon their excellent record.
Led by an excellent Thisara Perera, the team has plenty of batting options at its disposal. Avishka Fernando was the top run-getter for the Kings in the previous season, with 312 runs from 10 innings. He was also the only batsman to score a century in the season.
Supporting him will be Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who had an excellent outing at the recently concluded Abu Dhabi T10 League. Veteran Pakistan batsman Shoaib Malik Rahmanullah Gurbaz will lend strength to the middle order, while the team also has some useful all-rounders in the form of James Neesham and Dunith Wellalage.
Maheesh Theekshana was the leading wicket-taker for the Kings in the last season, and will once again look to trouble the batsmen with his off-spinners. Jayden Seales however will be missing a few matches due to international duties.

Galle Gladiators
The Galle Gladiators have played some excellent cricket over the last 2 seasons, but have faltered at the last step. The team reached the finals in both seasons so far but lost to the Jaffna Kings on both occasions.
The team has a new captain in the form of Kusal Mendis, who takes over from Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Mendis was the top-scorer for his team with 327 runs from 10 innings. Danushka Gunathilaka, who was great at the top of the order, will be missing this season. Another notable exclusion is English left-arm spinner Samit Patel, who was the leading wicket-taker in the league last season.
In his absence, the spin department will be led by Nimesh Vimukthi and Pulina Tharanga. Mohammad Hasnain bowled extremely well in the recently concluded Abu Dhabi T10 League, and much will be expected of him going forward.
