Unlike the North Group, where a couple of teams have just run away with wins and many are fighting it out in the middle part of the table, the battle for the top spot is more intense in the South Group. The difference between the first-placed and the last-placed side is of just 4 points. Kent Spitfires are sitting pretty at the top of the table with seven points and will lock horns with Sussex Sharks in their next game which is to be played on 27th July 2018.
The Spitfires started off the T20 Blast in a superb manner by registering a comprehensive win against Surrey. They haven't looked back ever since. Apart from their close defeat against Gloucestershire, they have been clinical in their approach in the T20 format.
They did not have the same destiny in the county championship game where they lost to Leicestershire Foxes. That, however, is unlikely to have an impact on their performance in the shortest format of the game where the required skillset and mindset are altogether different.
They were lucky to get away with a point in their last match as the rain came to their rescue after their bowlers were thwarted all around the park by Aaron Finch. Their bowlers used all the tricks at their disposal but still conceded 250 runs in the 20 overs. The batsmen didn't get the chance to get on the field as rain played the spoilsport.
Other than what we saw in their last match, their bowlers have done particularly well for them despite lacking a big name in their attack. The bulk of the work, however, has been handled by their batting lineup where the likes of Sam Billings, Joe Denly, Daniel Bell-Drummond and Heino Kuhn have been exceptional. Considering the surface at London is expected to be a batting paradise, the onus will be on their batsmen to take their team to victory in an important match.
Joe Denly, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Heino Kuhn, Sam Billings, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Blake, Sean Dickson, Calum Haggett, Adam Milne, Mitchell Claydon, Imran Qayyum.
Except for their defeat against Surrey in their last T20 game where Aaron Finch wrecked their bowling after being dropped for one, Sussex have done pretty well this season. They've won three out of the four matches in Vitality T20 Blast and were one of the few teams to register two wins in two matches in the county championship.
Although their bowling is centered around Rashid Khan and Jofra Archer, it isn't really heavily dependent on them. Robinson and David Wiese have done extremely well for them with the new ball and during the death and Danny Briggs has played the role of the second spinner to a good effect, whenever required.
More often than not in this tournament, their bowling has done so well that their batsmen haven't really felt the pressure to score quickly. However, in the last match, Aaron Finch deposited each of their bowlers into the stands and Surrey scored 192 runs while batting first. Their batting was put under the pump for the first time in the tournament and fell short of the target by 52 runs. Other than that, their batsmen have done well thus far.
Overall, Sussex have a strong bowling attack, which is capable of defending any total, complemented well by an experienced lineup consisting of Philip Salt, Luke Wright, Laurie Evans, and Tom Bruce. They'd need to utilize their experience against flamboyant batting of Kent and if they can do that, they'll be a tough team to crack.
Philip Salt, LJ Wright, Laurie Evans, Tom Bruce, Michael Burgess , D Wiese, Jofra Chioke Archer, Chris Jordan, Rashid Khan, Danny Briggs, TS Mills.
Both the teams are in a similar situation as far as points table is concerned. A win here for Sussex will take them to eight points at the numero uno spot in the points table. Rashid Khan has been a revelation in world-cricket and he will play a vital role in this upcoming game. With a superior bowling attack on paper and an experience batting lineup, Sussex Sharks are more likely to emerge victorious in this upcoming south group encounter.
