About the Match
This NatWest T20 Blast match between Kent and Sussex is going to be very important for both the teams. Both the teams have played 9 matches in the tournament and a combination of losses and no results have meant that they are in the bottom half of the table with 9 and 8 points respectively.
A win here though will catapult the winning team to near the top of the table and help them remain firmly in contention to make the finals day.
A tightly contested win by just 5 runs against Hampshire would have given a lot of confidence to the Kent Spitfires. After all, Hampshire is sitting at second place in the table and is considered to be one of the stronger teams in the competition.
Kent’s success this season has been built upon the form of its top-3 batsmen. Joe, Denly, Daniel Bell-Drummond and Sam Northeast have all scores runs consistently as evidenced by the 8 50 plus scores between them already.
Denly has a total of 367 runs to his name while Bell-Drummond with 305 and Northeast with 259 are not doing too badly either. These three have in fact outshone the much talked about Sam Billings who only has 168 runs to his name so far.
The strong batting lineup has meant that the relatively weaker suit of their team, the bowling, gets compensated for. Adam Milne has been struggling with a thigh injury and will not be available for this game either which means that the attack will be composed of Stevens, Coles, Neesham, Tredwell, and Qayyum.
It is a serviceable attack but definitely one that needs the cushion of runs from their batsmen.
The Sussex Sharks are also coming into this game on the back of a win but unlike Kent’s close victory, the Sharks absolutely annihilated Surrey.
After limiting a strong Surrey batting lineup to 148, Sussex went about chasing that score down in only 13.3 overs for the loss of two wickets. The star for their team was Tymal Mills who picked up three wickets for only 20 runs off his 4 overs.
Mills adds to a string bowling attack that also has Chris Jordan as the death overs specialist, David Wiese to chip in when needed and the very impressive Jofra Archer. We really like the look of this bowling attack and believe it could be among the best this tournament has to offer.
Of course, it was not just the bowling which shone in the last match. Stiaan van Zyl scored 52 from 21 balls while Chris Nash top scored with 64 from 36 balls. The addition of van Zyl to the top of the order has given the Sharks a much-needed boost at the top of the order.
The trouble with their batting lineup though is that is difficult to see where the momentum comes from if the openers get out cheaply as can happen with their high-risk approach.
Ross Taylor is a class player but without Luke Wright, this Sussex batting lineup looks decidedly frail.
Pitch and Conditions
The current forecast is for a nice warm day followed by a pleasant evening around the time that the match is scheduled to start. The chances of rain seem to be very low and so a full match will be played in all likelihood.
The pitch at Kent is true and offers decent bounce which should help the batsmen play their shots.
