About the Match
Kings XI registered their first victory of the season by defeating Supergiants by 6 wickets in their last outing; with 2 points on board, they will now take on 2nd place holders Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming match at Mohali on 19th April. KKR continued its domination and defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad to make their points tally 4 from 3 outings; they will be eager to continue with their winning momentum. Both teams have proven match-winners who can turn the tide in their favor; it needs to be seen which team can keep a cool head above their shoulders to emerge victorious on Tuesday.
Kings XI Punjab
Chasing 153 runs against the Dhoni-led Supergiants, Vijay and Vohra combined well to post a 97-run opening stand with both scoring half-centuries. Later, Maxwell smashed 2 sixes and 3 boundaries to post a quick fire 32 off just 14 balls and led the team safely to their first victory. Mohit Sharma excelled as he claimed 3 wickets giving away only 23 runs while Sandeep Sharma assisted well to take 2-23. Abbott proved to be expensive but he got rid of the deadly Pietersen at the right time.
Against Daredevils, the batting line-up had collapsed to only 111 runs; the bowlers couldn’t defend the lowly total and they had lost the match by 8 wickets. Miller and Shaun Marsh are yet to come out all guns blazing and this would be an appropriate time to do so; Maxwell’s return to form is a good sign and the openers look motivated to do a good job with the bat.
With a battery of pace bowlers like Mohit Sharma, Mitchell Johnson and Sandeep Sharma, Kings XI can definitely pose a tough challenge to KKR on home turf.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Umesh Yadav and Morkel took 5 wickets between them to restrict Sunrisers to 142 in the last game; Russell contributed with a wicket and was the most economical of the lot. With 143 runs to chase down, Gambhir and Uthappa blitzed a 92-run opening partnership to cause havoc on the hosts; Gambhir led from the front with a brilliant 90 off just 60 deliveries and Uthappa contributed with 38 to steer the team towards victory.
While the batsmen had done well against Mumbai Indians on home ground, posting a gigantic target of 188 runs, the bowlers gave away too many runs and had lost the match by 6 wickets. Gambhir’s special 64 off 52, Manish Pandey’s 52 off 29 and Russell’s well-made 36 from 17 balls went in vain as the Mumbai Indian batsmen galloped away to victory with 5 balls to spare.
They have a strong batting line-up and a good mix of pace and spin with Brad Hogg, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav bringing their skills to the table; against Daredevils the spinners and seamers had combined well to restrict the opposition to just 98 runs, which the batsmen had chased down without a sweat. KKR looks strong to continue with its all-round performance in the upcoming match too.
Kings XI received a morale boost after their recent victory but they will have to fire from all cylinders to overcome KKR, who have proven to be a strong side till now. Although the contest could swing either way, we feel Kings XI with their home advantage are better placed to win again.
