About the Match
Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the two teams lurching in the bottom half of the table, will lock horns in Mohali. Undoubtedly, there are limited chances for either side to qualify for the playoffs from this moment on. The winner of this fixture, though, will certainly take back lots of positives.
Kings XI Punjab
Kings XI Punjab has looked a very different side since Murali Vijay has come in as captain to replace David Miller, who only managed to win one out of six games played under his reign. The last three matches the Kings have played under Vijay have arguably been against the top three sides of the IPL season 9: Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Gujarat Lions.
Although they lost against Kolkata due to the heroics of Andre Russel, Kings XI Punjab beat Delhi Daredevils and Gujarat Lions quite comprehensively, which further proves that Vijay’s leadership has sparked some confidence back into the side.
In the previous fixture against Delhi Daredevils, Punjab also registered its highest inning score of 181 so far. Hence, things are looking a little bright now for Kings XI.
The team has not been rotated much since Murali has taken over as skipper. Most of the changes that have bene brought into the side are merely strategic. Murali’s approach is a bit more cautious. He has won the toss only once and has lost in that match. While in the other two fixtures, in which KXIP triumphed, Vijay lost both tosses.
Just maybe, Murali Vijay should opt to bat first from this point on.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Although it is true that the Royal Challengers like to chase, they have won only a single match while chasing in IPL 9, technically, because they have been put into bat second only twice in the tournament so far. No matter when the Royal Challengers bat, they have proved that their batting department is full of class and intent.
Nonetheless, batting has not been the problem for RCB; the bowling department, instead, has let Kohli and co. down. RCB has played eight games this season while only managing a win in three. The minimum any team has scored against the RCB bowlers is 171, which leads us to the conclusion that RCB’s reliance on its batting is hurting the franchise.
If Kohli wants to keep winning from this point on, he might as well have to surge some confidence in his bowlers. In the latest fixture, Rising Pune Supergiants scored a massive 191 in the first innings. All hail Kohli whose second ton in IPL this year helped his side to chase it down.
Kohli is not going to score a century every other day and an out of the ordinary performance by Virat will not make RCB any favorites. With the winning mentality that Vijay has incited into his Kings XI squad, Bangalore will have to be prepared for a tough challenge.
Overall, as long as Kohli does not produce yet another miracle, Kings XI Punjab remains at better odds to triumph in this match
