About the Match
Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils occupy the first and seventh positions respectively in the IPL points table. These two teams will now take on each other in the 32nd match of the league at Kolkata on 28th April. On one hand, a win here will keep Kolkata right at the top of the table; but on the other, Delhi would be eager to get a win under their belt after a number of closely fought defeats.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders are the current table toppers of the league. They have six wins out of eight games played so far, with two consecutive wins in their last two games.
Kolkata started their campaign with an absolute thrashing of Gujarat Lions, and though they lost their next game against Mumbai, but were in it right till the end and lost only by a very small margin. Then Kolkata dominated Punjab and Hyderabad with convincing wins over both the teams.
Then against Delhi, they were taken to the limit by a disciplined Delhi attack but Kolkata were able to hold their nerves and get over the line. Against Gujarat, they could not find an answer to the all-round brilliance of Raina and suffered only their second defeat of the tournament. But they came back strongly against Bangalore, bowling them out for the lowest ever team total in IPL and then continued the momentum with a convincing win against Rising Pune Supergiant.
Kolkata Knight Riders are the form team of the tournament right now, and their position in the points table only amplifies this statement. Their batsmen have all got runs at different stages of the tournament, the bowling is performing well as a unit, and they will be playing at their home. Considering all these factors, it would rather be an upset if Delhi are able to defeat them.
Delhi Daredevils have two wins out of the six games they have played so far. Both their wins have been convincing affairs, and all of their losses have been in tight games, where the results could have easily been different had some small moments fallen in place for them.
Delhi started off their campaign with a closely fought defeat against Bangalore where Rishabh Pant played a superb innings but did not get enough support from others to chase down Bangalore’s total. In their next two games, against Pune and Punjab, Delhi got convincing wins with a great century from Sanju Samson against Pune and a fantastic all round display from Corey Anderson against Punjab.
Then in the next game against Kolkata, the match went right to the wire, but in the final over, Amit Mishra could not stop Manish Pandey from chasing down Delhi’s total. This was followed by another close defeat against Hyderabad, where despite staying in the game throughout, Delhi fell right at the end and failed to chase down Hyderabad’s total of 191. Then in their last game against Mumbai, Delhi suffered a top order collapse but Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris played superbly to take Delhi very close, but fell at the final hurdle.
The Delhi bowling attack has remained very dependable and potent in all these games, with Zaheer Khan, Cummins, Shahbaz Nadeem, Amit Mishra, Chris Morris and Corey Anderson all doing their jobs perfectly. Delhi are actually playing well, their bowling has been their strength, and they have the resources in all departments to surprise Kolkata. They just need to find a way to get over the line this time.
Kolkata and Delhi are facing each other for the second time this season. The first encounter was won by Kolkata in a pretty close game. This match is being held in Kolkata, and thus offers home advantage to the Knight Riders. Delhi are a good team, but Kolkata are the form team and the table toppers, and also having the home advantage makes them clear favourites in this game
