About the Match
Unable to register a win till now, the Lions continue to be at the bottom of the points table with only 3 points and they will play against the Knights on January 24th at Potchefstroom to try and redeem themselves with a much-needed win. The Knights are at the 5th position just behind the Titans with 12 points on board after they won against the Warriors by a narrow margin of 5 runs in a nail-biting finish. The contest will be a crucial one for Knights if they want to keep their hopes alive to make it to the next stage whereas the Lions will be eager to win their respect back with a good performance on the field.
Rilee Rossouw put up a brave fight against the Warriors to post a run-a-ball 64 runs when his team mates collapsed around him under pressure. Struggling at 120-6, their score received a major impetus with Dillon du Preez’s quick 24 runs off the remaining 7 deliveries of the innings and the total got to 145 runs. Dillon gave an all-round performance by taking 2 wickets to paralyze the Warriors; with McLaren’s 2 wicket contribution and Siboto and Terblanche striking at the right time, they were able to wrap up the match with a 5-run win. Hendricks and Elgar who have done well in the previous matches need to bounce back with good scores whereas the middle order must also keep the scoreboard ticking. While the bowlers have been efficient in containing the run-flow, they will have to be consistent with the wickets to make a dent on the opponents. It will be an uphill task from here on and the players need to gear up to face the challenges ahead.
The bowling effort was disappointing wherein Azhar Mahmood and Imran Tahir were the only ones to take wickets with the former giving away 12.5 runs per over. The rest of the squad showed no discipline and the opponents got to a massive score of 214 runs that the batsmen failed to achieve. The efforts of Quinton and Petersen to score the big runs with a strike rate of 180+ were commendable and when Neil McKenzie thrashed away fours and sixes at a rapid pace to post 61 off 32 balls, the team looked confident of making it. But the remaining batsmen were not ready for the tall order and they collapsed like a pack of cards. It was heart-breaking for them to lose by 16 runs and will need to bounce back soon; Quinton, Bodi, Petersen and McKenzie are in good form and need to build steady partnerships whereas the bowlers must deliver results to help the team make a comeback into the series.
While the Lions have players who can give their opposition a fright, they haven’t played like a cohesive unit till now, which is the reason for their dismal performance overall; they need to put their collective efforts and strategize well here to turn the match in their favor. However, the Knights with their recent victory are charged up and look confident to move ahead on the table with a win here.
