About the Match
The Lions defeated Dolphins by 6 runs recently to gain a total of 8 points after 5 matches; they are in the 4th place on the table and will take on bottom-place holders Knights, who just have 5 points from one win, on 2nd December at Kimberley. The Knights have lost 5 consecutive matches and desperately need a win now to keep their hopes alive; they are meeting Lions for the first time this season and will fight hard to make amends with a victory here. On the other hand, Lions have had a mixed run so far and they will be eager to continue with their winning momentum on Friday.
Batting first against Warriors, the Knights lost their footing and fell like a pack of cards; except Kruger who scored 37 off 26, the others didn’t impress with the bat and they were all-out for a meagre 93 runs. The bowling performance was also lacklustre with speedsters like Zuma and Olivier giving away too many runs. Spinner Aubrey Swanepoel was brilliant with 1-1 while medium-pacer Schalkwyk dismissed one opponent but with not much to fight for, they lost the match by 8 wickets.
Against Titans, the bowlers tried their best to restrict the opposition but they ended up facing a competitive target of 169; Merchant de Lange, Olivier and Schalkwyk took 4 wickets between them but the batting line-up disappointed again. Patrick Kruger started the chase well with 79 off 60 while Theunis de Bruyn scored 47 off 34 but others like Andries Gous, David Miller and Rosier gave up without a fight and they lost the match by 10 runs.
They have a few in-form players with bat and ball, who could combine well and try to help the team make a comeback here.
Against Dolphins, the batting line-up did well to post 175 runs thanks to a solid effort by Rassie van der Dussen and Mangaliso Mosehle, who scored 40+ runs each. Others like Omphile Ramela, Nicky van den Bergh and Matt McGillivray helped keep the scoreboard ticking. Spinner Bjorn Fortuin claimed 3-23 while speedsters like Hardus Viljoen, Matt McGillivray and Ayavuya Myoli took 6 wickets between them to stifle the opponents and win the match by a narrow 6 runs.
In the match against Warriors, however, the bowlers were unable to defend 152 despite a good performance by Hardus Viljoen and spinners Eddie Leie and Aaron Phangiso. Mosehle had top-scored with 49 off 28 while openers Dominic Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen did well to post a 64-run opening stand. They have a deep batting line-up with players like Nicky van den Bergh, Devon Conway and in-form batsmen like Mosehle, Rassie van der Dussen and Hendricks, who could try and stabilise the innings whether batting first or during the chase in the upcoming match.
Overall, they are a talented lot that has done well to climb up the ladder till now; if they can strategize well and execute it, they could surely improve their standings in the league.
The Lions have played better than the Knights so far and they clearly are the favourites here; although the Knights also have good resources, we feel that the Lions who recently won a game are better placed to emerge victorious.
