About the Match
An emphatic victory against Hyderabad and the Kolkata Knight Riders are safe for now with 12 points from 11 matches; they face Chennai Super Kings, who have 16 points from the same number of matches, on 20th May at their home ground, Kolkata to take their campaign ahead. Chennai on the other hand suffered a shocking loss against Bangalore and will now be eager to safeguard its lead against the other teams before the crucial stage of the IPL 2014
begins. It will be interesting to see these rival teams bring out their best against each other to treat their fans with fireworks in all departments of the game.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Umesh Yadav was phenomenal taking 3 wickets giving away only 26 runs from his allotted four overs; along with Shakib, Narine and Chawla he restricted Hyderabad to 142 runs in their recent contest. Utthappa once again shone as he scored 40 off 33 deliveries and looked good to keep going had he not got run-out in the 10th over; it was then left to Pandey and Yusuf Pathan to steer the team to its target and with help from Ryan ten Doeschate, they won the match by 7 wickets. The chase was impressive as the batsmen handled the pressure with a cool head and Pathan finally came good with the bat scoring an unbeaten 39 runs off 28 balls whereas Pandey posted 35 off 32 deliveries. It was a good performance and everyone chipped in to work towards victory; the upcoming contest against Chennai will test their skills and smart thinking on the field. Gambhir will need to use his resources well and strategize against Dhoni’s plans to keep his team’s hopes alive.
Chennai Super Kings
Raina is in great shape and he demonstrated his capabilities once again by scoring 62 off 48 deliveries against their match against Bangalore recently but they could only get to a modest total of 138 runs. Hussey, McCullum, Dhoni and Jadeja have been contributing well but couldn’t get the big runs against RCB; however, they were looking confident to defend the low total. Ashwin and Hussey took 2 wickets each to cause trouble for Bangalore batsmen and Jadeja’s spin bowling was effective to dismiss Kohli at a crucial stage. However, it wasn’t their day and Bangalore had the last laugh with one ball to spare. Badree, Raina and Mohit Sharma have been very economical and contributing well with the wickets; they just need to be focused and work together as a tight knit unit as always. They will be cautious while playing Kolkata at its own backyard and Dhoni and his men will have to plan well to take the home team by surprise.
While Chennai is nursing its wound after its defeat against Bangalore, the team is charged up to win the upcoming matches and strengthen its position on the table. Though Kolkata will give a tough fight and draw energy from the support of the home crowd, Chennai looks hungry to go back to its winning ways and seems more likely to earn a win here.
