About the Match
Kolkata started the season with an emphatic victory over reigning champions, Mumbai in their first match, giving them a good morale boost to surge ahead whereas Delhi failed to capitalize on the good resources that they have, losing their opening encounter against Bangalore by 8 wickets. Both teams go up against each other in their 2nd match at Dubai on Apr 19. This match will be a very keenly contested match as the Daredevils would like to rise above the challenge and make a comeback here while KKR would be eager to repeat their recent performance and stay ahead of the competition.
Kolkata Knight Riders
While Gambhir failed to score any runs, opening the innings against Mumbai Indians, Manish Pandey and Kallis after some initial hick-ups, built a 131-run partnership for the 2nd wicket to steer the team to a good 163 runs. Players like Shakib, Utthappa and Yusuf Pathan couldn’t fire but by then they had strong defendable total on board. Morkel did well by bowling with good line and length to contain the flow of runs from hard-hitting Rohit that ultimately consumed him. Sunil Narine continued with his brilliant form and proved very effective in his off breaks claiming 4 wickets giving away just 20 runs in his spell. While Shakib and Uthappa couldn’t do well, they will surely provide depth with their all-round skills; Kallis and Piyush Chawla can bring in variety to the bowling attack. The opponent will have some surprises to contain the situation; Kolkata must be cautious not to get complacent and need to put in their best with the captain leading from the front.
Delhi Dare Devils
Though the top order failed to build partnerships, Duminy and Taylor put up a strong 110-run partnership for the 5th wicket to take their team to 145 runs but they couldn’t defend their total against the combined onslaught of Kohli and Yuvraj. The team has a good mix of overseas players and Indian youngsters but they must use the resources with a good strategy in the upcoming match. Put in to bat first, they lost 4 wickets with just 30 runs on board; Duminy and Taylor dug in and fired in full cylinders to set up a stiff target to RCB. Duminy is a solid bat and he contributed with a brilliant 67 off 48 balls whereas Taylor continued on his good form as he scored 43 off 39 balls; the team needs to re-think on pushing the duo up the order and make better use of their skills. Murali Vijay has been consistent in providing a good start to the innings but needs good support at the top. While Shami and Rahul Sharma got a wicket each, the bowling attack wasn’t good enough to restrict the opponents; they must use their variety in bowling and create a good mix of spin and speed. There are several players with individual abilities but they need to harness the strengths to produce results.
KKR is a determined team and have the appetite and resources to win any challenge; Daredevils also are to win and they have proven players who have been performing well in recent matches. It’ll be an interesting tie with both teams trying to overwhelm the other in every possible way; however, with the performances demonstrated so far, we expect Kolkata to win the match.
