About the Match
Royal Challengers created history with their record win against Gujarat Lions by 144 runs to keep their hopes alive this season; they will now have to win the match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Kolkata on 16th May. KKR is in the 2nd position with 14 points and defeated Supergiants by 8 wickets via D/L method to oust them from the tournament; RCB on the other hand has 10 points and is placed sixth on the table. Both teams will definitely come out all guns blazing with the bat and we are sure to see a full-on entertainer if the rain gods don’t play havoc.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Piyush Chawla and Russell took 3 wickets between them to restrict the Supergiants; along with bowlers like Shakib Al Hasan and Rajpoot, who took a wicket each, they contained the opponents to 103 runs on 17.4 overs. The batsmen had to chase a target of 66 runs from 9 overs in a rain-curtailed match and they did so with ease thanks to an unbeaten 37 off 18 from Pathan and a good contribution by Pandey. Gambhir and Uthappa struggled with the bat but they surely are in good form to bounce back in the upcoming match against the hard-hitting RCB batsmen.
In the match against Gujarat Lions, Shakib Al Hasan and Yusuf Pathan, each posted a well-made 60+ runs to take the scoreboard to 158; the bowlers tried their best to stifle the opposition with players like Russell, Shakib, Hogg and Chawla taking a wicket each but in the end the top-order batsmen’s failure to garner runs led to their defeat by 5 wickets with 12 balls remaining.
When they met RCB previously, the middle order had risen to the challenge of chasing a competitive 186 runs successfully and helped win the match by 5 wickets; they will need to gel well as a team and try to score a good total if batting first. The bowlers will need to create magic with the ball to contain the in-form RCB top-order here if they want to win again.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Ab de Villiers and Kohli delivered a devastating blow to the Gujarat Lions, each scoring brilliant centuries in half the number of deliveries to take the team home to a massive win by 144 runs, an IPL record. While Kohli posted 109 off 55, ABD scored 129 from just 52 deliveries, both showering sixes and fours at will. Chris Jordan claimed 4-11 in 3 overs while Chahal took 3-19 to stifle the opposition with regular breakthroughs; Sachin Baby and Aravind took 3 wickets between them to restrict the Lions to a measly 104 and win the match in a big way.
Against Mumbai Indians however, the top-order collapsed and except Rahul, who scored 68 off 53, the others failed to come out all guns blazing; the bowlers found it an uphill task to defend 151 runs and they suffered defeat by 6 wickets with 8 balls remaining.
The batting line-up is in tremendous form and they will surely leave no stone unturned to punish the KKR bowlers in their own backyard; the upcoming match is crucial for them and we will definitely see them put up a stiff challenge to the hosts.
Both the sides have been playing pretty well; KKR demolished Pune Supergiants in their last encounter whereas RCB wrecked havoc on Gujarat Lions. Although KKR has the home advantage, we feel that RCB which faces a must-win situation will repeat its enchanting performance with the bat to overcome the hosts and keep their hopes alive
