About the Match
The Knight Riders having defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last match, have 16 points from 13 matches and have made it to the playoffs whereas the Sunrisers Hyderabad with 12 points from 13 matches are playing in their last league match against the Knight Riders on 24th May at Eden Gardens to keep their hopes alive. Both teams have raised their level of the game in all departments and have been winning very difficult matches; while the home team is in a celebratory mood, the visitors’ fate hangs on the outcome of the matches involving Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians and they will also decide the fate of the others in the running.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Utthappa is the man who took the team home, thus far giving 100% in every match and was phenomenal against RCB, in which he remained unbeaten giving the team victory and taking them to the next level and knocking out RCB from the race. Shakib Al Hasan made 60 off 38 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes and in the company of Utthappa, jointly contributed 121 runs for the 4th wicket. They set a target of 196 to Royal Challengers, which they could not achieve due to a tight bowling effort and good field support by the Knight Riders. Narine bowled superbly to dismiss 4 top order batsmen of Royal Challengers, breaking their spine and any hope of winning the match. In the present match, they are against the Sunrisers who are also a motivated lot, delivering and winning crunch games; while KKR is through to the next stage, they will surely not like to lose their winning momentum.
Fielding first against CSK in their previous match, they controlled the game efficiently but for the last over, which gave 26 runs to the Super Kings who set a target of 186 for them. Except for K V Sharma who took 2 wickets, no other bowler got wickets but everyone had a cut out task which they executed well in the Chennai Innings. Chasing the target of 186, openers Warner and Shikhar Dhawan added 116 for the 1st wicket in the 12th over; when Warner fell at 90 off 45 balls for a very well delivered ball by Hastings, Ojha joined Dhawan and they together took the score to 168 but Ojha departed with the team still needing 19 runs from 17 balls. Finch and Sammy fell cheaply and it was left to Shikhar Dhawan, who in the company of V. Rao, smashed the winner with a 4 off Jadeja, remaining unbeaten with 64 off 49 balls that consisted of 4 fours and 2 sixes. They thus have 12 points from 13 matches and this match is crucial for them; it needs to be seen how it all plays out for SRH as their fate also rests on the matches involving Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians.
Hyderabad has given some stunning performances in the recent matches and their determination keeps growing with every passing game; though KKR will give a tough challenge, SRH with their good form and purposeful strategy, are more likely to win the contest.
