About the Match
Cantons registered an emphatic win against Kaitak by 8 wickets in their opening match after chasing down 200 runs successfully; they will now go up against Jaguars, who lost their game against United but won against Gladiators, on 10th March at Mong Kok. The Jaguars have had a mixed run so far and will try to lead the pack with a better performance here; Cantons, on the other hand, did well to start the series with a win and will leave no stone unturned to continue with their winning momentum on Friday.
West-Indies batsman Dwayne Smith came out in his fiery form and gunned down an unbeaten 121 off just 40 deliveries while chasing 200 runs against Kaitak. His innings consisted of as many as 13 sixes and 7 boundaries, and he is in good form to repeat the performance again. He was well supported by Marlon Samuels, who scored 59 off 33, and the duo took the team to a stellar win by 8 wickets with more than 5 overs to spare.
Spinner Yasir Arafat struck at the opposition by taking 2 wickets in the 4th over while Ashar Zaidi and speedster Ehsan Nawaz took a wicket each but they couldn’t stop them from scoring 199 runs batting first. The squad has fast-bowlers like Tanveer Ahmed, all-rounders Dwayne Smith and Samuels, who can try to provide quick breakthroughs against Jaguars.
The batting line-up has players like Calum MacLeod, Babar Hayat, Samuels and Smith, who could try to build a solid foundation whether chasing a target or setting one in the upcoming match.
Hung Hom JD Jaguars
Chasing 217-run target against Island United was a humungous task but middle-order batsman Jonathan Foo kept his feet firm on the ground to get the runs flowing with a well-made 77 off 47. Opener Nizakat Khan started the innings confidently with 34 runs but was unable to build a steady partnership. Other experienced all-rounders like Sammy, Botha and James Franklin tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but they fell short by 33 runs.
Medium-pacer Mohammad Naveed took 2-29 while Franklin put up an economical show by giving away only 27 runs and providing a wicket. However, others like Caddy, Botha, Shah and Imran Arif couldn’t contain the opposition and they ended up facing a huge total to chase.
In the opening match against Gladiators, Sammy and Franklin did well to score 50+ runs each and post 145-run target, which theydefended successfully thanks to fast-bowlers Imran Arif and Caddy’s ruthless attack, taking 3 scalps each. Botha provided the opening breakthrough and they combined well to help win the match by 27 runs. They have the talent and experience to make a comeback.
Cantons are on high spirit after their victory in the first match, and could come out all guns blazing once again; Jaguars are also a tough team to break and could put up a fight to the finish. While the contest may swing either way, we feel that Cantons with their hard-hitters are better placed to win.
