About the Match
After recording three wins on the trot, the Sylhet Sixers have lost their last two games and are up against the Khulna Titans as they try and regain some of the early momentum they built up. The Khulna Titans are also coming into this match on the back of a loss against the Dhaka Dynamites and need to get their strategy right. Two flawed teams with plenty of potential are going to take on each other in this important match.
With two wins from four matches, the Khulna Titans are sitting at fourth in the league table right now. It is increasingly looking like the Titans will be fighting with the Sylhet Sixers and the Rangpur Riders for a qualification spot making this match all the more important.
The Khulna Titans made some changes to their batting order once again in the last match against the Dhaka Dynamites but it did them little good. Their openers, Walton and Nazmul Shanto are struggling for form putting the middle order under pressure.
Both the openers only have 46 and 45 runs to their name at the moment. It may be time to break up this partnership and look for some other options.
Michael Klinger started the tournament well but has since failed in two matches. His inability to get spin off the square as he starts his innings could be exploited by more teams going forward. Rilee Rossow continues to spend some valuable time in the middle without actually going on to score a big one. He is one player that we believe is about to go big in the upcoming matches.
Mahmudullah moved himself up one place in the batting position but was once again left to pick up the pieces rather than get the scoreboard moving. The only bright spot for the Khulna Titans so far has been Carlos Braithwaite. The big West Indian is scoring at a strike rate of nearly 200 and has 11 sixes to his name.
Abu Jayed, Shaiful Islam, and Joffra Archer all make for a formidable bowling attack with Akila Dananjaya also chipping in when given the chance.
The success of the Sylhet Sixers has been built on the back of a successful opening partnership between Upul Tharanga and Andre Fletcher. The two matches when they did not perform (Fletcher was not available for one) were the ones that they ended up losing.
It is fair to say that the Titans will come hard at their top order and hope to pick up some early wickets.
We expect to see Fletcher back at the top of the order with Tharanga for this match.
Apart from the top two batsmen who are nearing 200 runs for the tournament, Nasir Hossain, Gunathilaka, and Ross Whiteley are the ones that have contributed with some useful runs so far.
This is a batting order that looks formidable when it gets the string start at the top but one that does not necessarily have the depth to overcome the loss of early wickets.
One of the players that could really make a difference to the team is Sabbir Rahman. He only has 22 runs to his name from five innings with 16 of them coming in one outing. He needs to start contributing if the Sylhet Sixers want to move on towards the knockouts and further in the tournament.
Liam Plunkett is the standout bowler in this attack with 6 wickets to his name and a fantastic economy rate of 6.66 across three games. Tim Bresnan picked up two wickets in just two overs in his first game as well. None of the other bowlers has really set the tournament alight although Taijul Islam and Abul Hasan have been reliably consistent.
The Sixers seem to be needing a brilliant individual performance in every game to be able to get across the line and that is something that is not going to happen all the time.
Pitch and Conditions
The pitch at Mirpur is going to offer plenty of assistance to the spinners. The teams have looked to chase in day games and we expect that to remain the same in this game. The batsmen should be able to score plenty of runs while the ball is hard.
The Khulna Titans won against the Sylhet SIxers when they first met in this tournament and we are backing a repeat of that result in this game as well.
