About the Match
Kings XI Punjab and Gujarat Lions occupy the fifth and seventh positions respectively in the IPL points table. These two teams will now take on each other in the 47th match of the league at Mohali on 7th May. A win here will help Punjab in keeping their chances of finishing in the top four strong and alive. For Gujarat though, a playoff berth is already out of reach, and all that is left for them to play for is pride.
Kings XI Punjab
Punjab had started their campaign with wins in their first two matches at their second home, Indore, but then went on to lose four games in a row. Punjab began with an emphatic win over Pune and then continued their run in the next match with an absolute thrashing of Royal Challengers Bangalore.
But as they moved away from home, they lost the next three matches to Kolkata, Delhi, and Hyderabad. In their next game against Mumbai, even a return to Indore could not change their fortunes, and they ended up on the losing side.
After four consecutive losses, Punjab was finally able to find a win against Gujarat in their next match. This win did not result in a complete change of fortunes though, as Punjab, missing an injured Amla desperately, surrendered meekly against Hyderabad.
But their see-saw campaign continued in their next match against Delhi, where they absolutely mauled Delhi, restricting them to a meager 67 and then chasing the target down easily. They continued their ascent in the points table in their last match as well, with a victory over a hapless Bangalore on Friday.
Punjab have now got five wins out of ten games, and need to keep winning in order to stay in contention. They seem to have found the right combination which gives them the right balance, and now must utilize the momentum they have got to make their path towards top four easier.
Gujarat Lions have had a really poor season this year. They were beaten by Delhi in their last game, and are now languishing at the seventh position in the IPL points table.
Gujarat had started their campaign with two losses against Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. But in their next match against Rising Pune Supergiant, Andrew Tye took a five-wicket haul and gave Lions their first win of the season.
This win could have led to a shift in momentum for them, but it was not to be. In their fourth game against Mumbai Indians, the batting did well, but the bowling again failed to defend the total. Then against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the bowlers gave away a massive 213 runs and the batsmen could not chase it down, despite a massive effort from Brendon McCullum.
Things were looking real bad for Gujarat; but against Kolkata, their captain Suresh Raina displayed great all round skills and won the match for his team. But any hopes of sustaining this momentum were dashed by Punjab in their next encounter, where Gujarat never really looked like chasing down Punjab’s total of 188 and were beaten quite comprehensively.
Then they were able to get a win against their fellow strugglers, Bangalore, but went on to lose their next three games against Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi.
Gujarat only has three wins from eleven games thus far and have suffered due to some very obvious chinks in their armor. They have not been able to fix these chinks, and as a result are out of the contention for a top four finish.
Gujarat and Punjab are facing each other for the second time this season. Punjab had scored a dominant win in the first encounter. This match is being held in Mohali and offers the home advantage to Punjab. Punjab have also had a better season overall, and all these factors give them the upper hand in this contest
