KXIP vs KKR Match Prediction - Oct 10, 2020

We are almost at the halfway stage in the Indian Premier League 2020 and going by the looks of it, the second half is going to be exciting. Kings XI Punjab continued to lag with yet another poor show and will need to pick themselves up quickly to avoid being the first team to be eliminated.

With a win needed in almost every game, Kings XI Punjab have a tough road ahead, but they certainly do have the team to get across the line. They have a tough assignment up next wherein they are set to face Kolkata Knight Riders, who are coming off a fantastic win over Chennai Super Kings. As we are approaching the back-end of the competition, each match is gaining importance. The upcoming match is going to be critical for both sides, more so for Kings XI Punjab, and a mouth-watering contest is certainly on the cards. The match is to be played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, on Saturday, 10th October 2020.

KXIP vs KKR Team Previews

Kings XI Punjab

Stranded at the bottom of the points table, Kings XI Punjab have undoubtedly been the worst-performing team of the season so far. It is rather surprising because it is the same team that has given us some of the tournament's glorious performances, with bat and ball both. With just one win in six matches, the Kings have two points and their recent loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad has ensured that their net run-rate doesn't stay healthy either. They have a net run-rate of -0.431, which could be a factor should things get tight towards the end of the league stage.

While Kings XI Punjab would be happy that they finally managed to get their death bowling right, giving away just 40 runs off the last four against Sunrisers Hyderabad, they'll be utterly disappointed with their batting performance. That is largely because it was their batting that was keeping them afloat in most of the matches and with that feeling the heat as well, things are not going to be easy for Kings XI Punjab.

Mayank Agarwal has looked good in the last couple of matches, but hasn't really managed to kick-on and get a big score. KL Rahul, on the other hand, now seems to be feeling the pressure of captaincy and that is reflecting in his own batting performance as his approach has gone from being fearless to being cautious. There have already been talks of whether or not to bring Chris Gayle into the picture and we might finally see the Universe Boss take the field in this upcoming match.

Despite a dismal batting performance in the previous match, Kings XI Punjab have a few positives to draw as well. Nicholas Pooran, who happened to be the lone warrior, would be more confident after his belligerent knock and could prove to a trump card for his team in the upcoming matches.

However, the form of Glenn Maxwell continues to be a cause of concern and he might not have much time with him before the management decides to replace him with someone else. Also, we have seen some questionable tactics from the think tank, as far as the batting order of the team is concerned. In the hindsight, one could argue that Prabhsimran Gill looked good in his short stay, it made absolutely no sense to send him in at number three instead of Mandeep Singh, who did an excellent job against the Chennai Super Kings.

Rarely do teams win matches when their bowlers fail to take wickets. After a wicket-less night against Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab's bowlers suffered a similar fate for the most part of their innings before Ravi Bishnoi got rid of David Warner. Captaincy, as well, appeared to be pretty defensive as KL Rahul decided to operate with the bowlers not known to be wicket-takers. They'll be pleasantly surprised by the performance of Arshdeep Singh and the youngster might have a big role to play against KKR as well. Despite a decent display at death, the Kings still don't have a settled set of bowlers to bowl in the death overs and that could be a massive challenge against KKR. As a replacement for Sheldon Cottrell, we might see Chris Jordan being brought back into the playing eleven in the upcoming match. There are high chances of Ishan Porel making his way into the side as well.

It is apparent that Kings XI Punjab are desperate to get a win under their belt. They were found making too many changes off-field and trying too many things on-fields, and such uncertainly could backfire in the upcoming matches. Kings XI Punjab do not have much time remaining for them to get back to the winning ways and they'd need their seniors to step up. If they can do that and play to their potential, it won't be long before Kings XI Punjab are back in the business once again.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Not often do we see Chennai Super Kings losing from a position of strength. However, they did in their last match wherein they were playing against Kolkata Knight Riders. It was a great tactical win by Kolkata Knight Riders that took them to the third spot on the points table. With Sunrisers' win over Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders moved to the fourth spot. With six points to their name, Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking to reclaim the third spot on the ladder with a win in their upcoming match. They have a decent net run-rate of 0.002 and any success hereon should help them build on that net run-rate.

It was an excellent amalgamation of innovation, skill, and tactics that helped Kolkata Knight Riders eventually end up ahead against Chennai Super Kings. After a string of failures at the top for Sunil Narine, he was sent in the middle-order to push the run-rate. While the move didn't really pay off, it didn't really make any difference whatsoever as Narine didn't take too many deliveries and added 17 runs to the total.

However, the move to keep Sunil Narine till the very end paid rich dividends as he picked up the all-important wicket of Shane Watson and didn't allow MS Dhoni to score many in the same over. Alongside him, Varun Chakravarthy was brilliant as well, as against all odds, the spin pair of KKR turned the match in their favor. Earlier in the second innings, Kolkata Knight Riders appeared to be struggling against the experienced top-order of Chennai Super Kings consisting of Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, and Ambati Rayudu. However, the management won't be concerned about that considering the way all the bowlers have bowled for KKR in the tournament so far.

With almost seven bowlers available to bowl, Kolkata Knight Riders are one of the better-balanced teams in the competition and that could be a significant advantage to have in the shortest version of the game. It's not that their batting lineup is thinly stacked. They have the likes of Eoin Morgan, Andre Russell, Nitish Rana, and Shubhman Gill available, who all have looked good in the middle. Their move to open with Rahul Tripathi also worked wonders as Tripathi single-handedly took them to a challenging total, which proved to be vital at the end.

One of the major concerns for the Knight Riders would be their skipper's form and batting position. While Dinesh Karthik has been brilliant with his decisions and with the gloves, he has failed to deliver with the bat. He hasn't looked sure with his shot-selection and that is something he would need to work on before getting into the business end of the tournament. He has plenty of experience up his sleeve and should come out with a good innings sooner rather than later.

On paper, Kolkata Knight Riders have an immaculately balanced team, but performing consistently has been an issue with them thus far. While they have good batsmen available right through, they rely heavily on Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell to score heavily at the end. We believe that the decision to open with Rahul Tripathi will help the Knight Riders to sort their issues out, as far as consistency is concerned. With the ball, they have a wide array of options available, be it in the powerplay or at the death.

Kolkata Knight Riders are one of the most unpredictable teams of the tournament. While watching them play can be frustrating at times, they can also produce some of the most glorious moments, just as we saw in their previous match. They have match-winners available right through their lineup, in both departments of the game, with almost everyone capable enough to carry the team. Their recent victory over Chennai Super Kings would have imbibed a lot of belief among the team and beating Kolkata Knight Riders would certainly be a tough ask going forward.

KXIP vs KKR Toss Prediction

In the tournament so far, toss has proved to be a blessing in disguise for the team losing it. Recently though, the decision to bat first after winning the toss has proved to be right more often than not. Although the dew could make things difficult at the back-end of the match, the slowness of the surface would likely even things out. Also, runs on the board could put the chasing team under pressure. Considering the factors stated above, the captain winning the toss will be looking to bat first.

Pitch and Conditions

Out of all the three surfaces selected for IPL 2020, Abu Dhabi is arguably the only surface that has behaved most like the surfaces in UAE are known for. The surface hasn't been a difficult one to bat one, but it hasn't been a batting beauty either. Unlike Sharjah Cricket Ground, the ground here is pretty big and hitting sixes won't be easy. There are wide open spaces in between the stands and that will ensure wind blowing across the ground. Depending upon the direction of the wind on the match-day, the largest boundary could be difficult to clear. Despite the dew having an impact here, Abu Dhabi has been the lowest-scoring venue in the tournament. The team batting first here should be looking to put a total of at least 165 runs on the board.

KXIP vs KKR Betting Tips

Kings XI Punjab are languishing at the bottom of the table and they'll be desperate for a win here. A win for them will not only bring them back to the contention but will also open up the points table. Kolkata Knight Riders, too, will want to register a win here and inch closer to a playoff spot. These are still early days but points on the board now could make a massive difference at the fag end of the league stage. While Kolkata Knight Riders look fairly settled with their playing eleven, Kings XI Punjab are still struggling to get their combination right. Also, the two teams are coming off contrasting results in their last match, and owing to their win, Kolkata Knight Riders will be brimming with confidence. Considering that as well as the reasons stated above, Kolkata Knight Riders should emerge on top in the upcoming match at Abu Dhabi.

    Match Total Runs

Although we have seen a few high-scoring matches in the tournament gone by, most of those have come on the surfaces of Dubai and Sharjah. The surface in the upcoming match as well is unlikely to be ideal for stroke-making. Despite the dew assisting, the surface is bound to get slow towards the back-end of the match and hitting through the line will be difficult. Also, big boundaries here ensure that fetching runs through sixes is not easy. Considering the mentioned factors, the match total is unlikely to exceed 330.

    Eoin Morgan - Total Runs

Eoin Morgan is without a doubt the most experienced batsman Kolkata Knight Riders. Of late, the English captain has started to bat up the order, which gives him enough time to settle in and then play his shots. He got off to a rather sedate start in the tournament, but has looked in superb form. Given the risk-reward ratio, this punt seems to be the one worth taking.

Team To Bowl The Most Extras In Match

    Kings XI Punjab at 1.95

As seen in the last few matches, Kings XI Punjab's bowlers have been under the pump. Also, they have an unsettled bowling lineup with bowlers not having enough regular game time. They have not only failed to pick up wickets, but have also conceded runs at a brisk pace. We expect this trend to continue and that is likely to induce some extras. Given that, Kings XI Punjab are more likely to concede more extras between the two sides.

This match is to be played on the surface that is not known to assist playing on the up. The will be in the minds of the openers of both the openers and are likely to start cautiously unless they get a freebie first up. Also, none of the four batsmen set to open in this match are known for slam-bang-whallop approach. For the stated reasons, there is high probability that the first ball of the match will be a dot ball.
