Wow! Just Wow! Indian Premier League 2020 just keeps getting better. Just when we thought that we have achieved the pinnacle of excitement in the tournament, Mumbai Indians and Royals Challengers Bangalore produced yet another thrilling encounter that went right down to the wire and eventually ending with a super-over. The loss of Mumbai Indians left the points table in a position with all teams favorite to qualify in the bottom half.
Given the way things have gone in the last few matches, the upcoming match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians promises to be a cracker of a contest. The two teams are going neck and neck on the points table and a win here will push the winners firmly into the top four. These are still early days in the tournament, but both teams would desperately want to put those two points on the board by posting a win here. The match is to be played on Thursday, 1st October 2020, at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi.
Not many teams would have expected Kings XI Punjab to get off to the kind of start they have gotten off to. Certainly not when they'd get to know that Chris Gayle won't feature in the first three matches. The Kings have been in fantastic form in the competition and both their losses have been by narrow margins. There ended up on the wrong side of super-over against Delhi Capitals in their first match and failed to seal the match against Rajasthan Royals despite being in a position to dictate terms at one stage.
Kings XI Punjab are currently placed at the fourth spot on the ladder with only one win in three matches. Yes, they had been a tad too unlucky, but their over-reliance on Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul hasn't been hidden as well. In the three matches gone so far, Kings' openers have done the bulk of the scoring, and the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, and Karun Nair have failed to contribute.
The potency of their batting lineup is evident from the fact that there have only been two centurions in this edition of IPL so far and both have come from the Kings' camp. KL Rahul smashed a terrific century against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mayank Rahul scored so against Rajasthan Royals. On paper, they have Glenn Maxwell, Jimmy Neesham, Karun Nair, and Nicholas Pooran available in their lineup and they all are capable enough to win the match on their own.
While Kings XI Punjab have been brilliant, the results haven't really reflected that. One of the primary reasons for that is their bowling in the slog overs. Barring Mohammad Shami, none of their bowlers managed to execute their plans in the two matches that the Kings lost. Sheldon Cottrell was carted for 30 runs in one over by Rahul Tewatia whereas it was Chris Jordan who was hammered in Kings XI Punjab's match against Delhi Capitals.
Before the tournament started, Kings XI Punjab appeared to be a team a little light on spin-bowling. However, their young spinners have done a terrific job thus far with Ravi Bishnoi taking the charge. Despite getting hit for long ones, Bishnoi hasn't been afraid to toss the ball up and that has been his secret sauce. Murugan Ashwin has played his part to perfection as well. Given the way the two spinners have handled the pressure, they could hold the key against the power-packed batting line-up of Mumbai Indians.
The Kings undoubtedly have an opening pair that has been the best in the tournament so far. However, the fact that they could score only 223 after an enterprising start by their openers speaks a lot about how poor their middle-order has been. With Jimmy Neesham being the only fast bowler available other than Cottrell and Shami, their death-bowling may well come under the scanner yet again given the potent batting lineup of Mumbai Indians. Along with their openers, Kings XI Punjab desperately need Glenn Maxwell and Nicholas Pooran to contribute with the bat. Also, twice the Kings have failed to keep their nerves under-pressure and it could once again prove to be a deciding factor in the upcoming match. If Kings XI Punjab manage to handle pressure well in the upcoming match, Mumbai Indians will certainly have their work cut out.
Lokesh Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, Karun Nair, James Neesham, Sarfaraz Khan, K Gowtham, Mohammed Shami, Sheldon Cottrell, Ravi Bishnoi.
Mumbai Indians were one of the favorites to finish among the top four teams, but the start they've gotten off to doesn't reflect the strength they possess. In fact, Mumbai Indians have a knack of starting slow and catching up in the back-end of the tournament. As it stands, they are sitting at the fifth spot on the points table and will be looking for a win, which would take them into the top half.
There's been so little that Mumbai Indians have done wrong and they still find themselves with just one win out of the three played. They got off to an unfortunate start as Chennai Super Kings overhauled their middling total with significant ease. With a fantastic win over Kolkata Knight Riders in their subsequent match, Mumbai Indians clawed back into the reckoning. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians reached mightly close to chasing down a colossal total successfully, but a disappointing show in the super-over cost them two important points.
Going by the form of their players, Mumbai Indians appear to be having everything under control. Even though Rohit Sharma failed to fire in the previous match, it wasn't long ago when he smashed a belligerent fifty to take his team to a towering total. Quinton de Kock has looked good with the bat as well as behind the stumps and a good innings is certainly on the cards. However, given that Ishan Kishan announced himself with a fantastic 99-run knock, we might see the South African captain getting replaced by Chris Lynn pretty soon.
Mumbai Indians will draw a huge amount of confidence with the show their lower middle-order put against RCB. The men in blue needed to score at 20 runs an over for the last four overs and they did the unthinkable. Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan smashed the bowlers to all parts of the ground before Kishan holed out at deep mid-wicket on the second-last delivery of the match. Mumbai needed five to win and Pollard managed to sneak-in with a boundary to take the game to the super-over.
While Mumbai Indians were far from their best in the super-over with the bat, Jasprit Bumrah was incredible with the ball. He kept AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli quiet and almost brought the game to a verge of a tie in the super-over.
With Hardik Pandya not available to bowl, Mumbai Indians appear to be a little thin on fast-bowling variety. There's no doubt that Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and James Pattinson are all world-class bowlers, MI lacks a fast-bowler who can bowl in the middle-overs. Having said that, not many teams have the luxury and given that Mumbai Indians can imagine having it, speaks volumes about their balance.
On paper, not many teams come close to Mumbai Indians as far as balance is concerned. They have a fantastic batting lineup with an immaculate amalgamation of accumulators and power-hitters. The likes of Kieron Pollard, Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav are in fine form and will be difficult to contain. Not often do we see the first and second-ranked bowlers in the World Cricket bowl in tandem, and Mumbai Indians have that luxury. All in all, if Cricket was a game played on paper, Mumbai Indians would have been champions already. If they can replicate their on-paper strength on the field, not many teams would stand a chance against them.
Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, SA Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, James Pattinson, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, JJ Bumrah.
Yet again in the tournament did the team losing the toss once again as Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Delhi Capitals with significant ease. Losing the toss has so far proved to be a blessing in disguise and that has primarily been due to the teams over-relying on dew to accelerate in the second innings. Despite all that, toss is likely to play an important role going forward in the tournament. With the dew factor likely to have an impact and both sides having a potent batting lineup, we expect the captain winning the toss to field first.

While there has been an ample amount of dew in the second innings, the teams chasing haven't found chasing as easy. In the four matches gone so far, the average scores have been more around 160-run mark with Mumbai's score of 195 in one match being an aberration rather than the norm. The surface has been slow and spinners have enjoyed bowling here. We once again expect dew to make an impact here and setting a score won't be easy. Although we have seen the temperatures drop by a couple of degrees over the last few days, it is still going to be pretty hot and fitness levels will be tested. Any total of more than 170 batting first will be a hard one to chase down.

Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab were both involved in adrenaline-pumping and nail-biting finishes in their respective matches and they both eventually failed to taste the success. Given that the two teams are separated only by net run-rate on the points table, this match is of significant importance. A win here will not only push the winning team in the top half of the table but will also provide the team with much-needed momentum, which can be crucial in the shortest format of the game. On performance and recent results, it is hard to pick between the two sides. On paper, however, Mumbai Indians are clearly the stronger side with match-winners available right through the lineup and an excellent bowling attack. For that reason and the ones stated above, Mumbai Indians certainly are the firm favorites to emerge on top in this all-important fixture.
While KL Rahul has gathered all the headlines, Mayank Agarwal, so far, has flown under the radar. Agarwal, in fact, has batted as well as KL Rahul, if not better. He is currently second on the list of leading run-scorers in the tournament and we expect him to continue building on the terrific form. Powerplay is expected to be the best time to bat in the upcoming match and given the form he is in, hitting three boundaries should be like a walk in the park for Mayank Agarwal.
The average first innings total here has been around 160 and given the batting lineups of the two sides, we expect the totals to run a little higher than the usual. The last time Mumbai Indians played here, they scored a towering total of 195 batting first. Kings XI Punjab, as well, have been in fantastic form with the bat a scoring an above-par total shouldn't be difficult for them either. Therefore, we expect the total number of runs scored in the match to easily exceed 318.
Apart from his outing against Delhi Capitals, KL Rahul has looked in fantastic form. Even against Delhi Capitals, he appeared to be batting well before getting castled by Mohit Sharma. In the three matches that Kings XI Punjab have played, he already has a century and a fifty to his name. Even though the surface won't be eas easy to bat on as was at Sharjah, KL Rahul shouldn't have much trouble in hitting a personal score of more than 43.
Even though Mumbai Indians have a world-class opening pair, it has looked far from settled. Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma have both had starts, but their partnership hasn't prospered yet. On the other hand, Kings XI Punjab's openers have done exceedingly well with both their openers having a century each to their name already. Together, Agarwal and Rahul added 182 runs for the 1st Wicket against Rajasthan Royals. For the reasons stated above, Kings XI Punjab should have a better opening partnership in the upcoming match.
Even though Ravi Bishnoi does not have wealth of experience behind him, he has been terrific in the tournament so far. He was difficult to pick even for the likes of Aaron Finch and AB de Villiers when KXIP took on RCB. Besides, the surface heavily favors the leg-spinners, evident by Rashid Khan & Amit Mishra being highly successful in the previous match played here. With conditions conducive to spin, we expect Bishnoi to be King XI Punjab's best bowler on the day.
