About the Match
Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi each one their last game to garner 2 points in their bag; the two teams will now face each other on the 6th Match of the PSL at Dubai on 12th February. While the Qalandars defeated favourites Islamabad United by 6 wickets but lost the first game against Gladiators, Zalmi overcame Karachi Kings recently by 7 wickets after suffering defeat against United in the opening match by 7 wickets through the D/L method. Both sides have tasted success recently and will fight hard to keep the winning momentum going.
Jason Roy and McCullum fired away with confidence during the chase for 159 against United; while Roy scored a superb 60 off 51, the Kiwi batsman posted a quick fire 25 to help them get the scoreboard ticking. Umar Akmal and Narine contributed with 25 and 26 runs respectively to take the team safely towards a win.
Earlier, Grant Elliott dismissed 4 opponents with his fast-bowling skills while speedster Sohail Tanvir and spinner Narine took a wicket each to stifle the opposition to 158 runs. The win has boosted their morale and they will try to cleverly use the resources here too. In the match against Gladiators though, the batting line-up faltered and couldn’t get the required 137 after players like McCullum, Roy, Elliott Umar Akmal and others got out in regular intervals.
Speedsters Mohmmad Irfan and Sohail Tanvir took 5 wickets between them while Narine was brilliant with a 2-wicket haul but their good efforts couldn’t convert into a win. Overall, they have good resources with bat and ball, and are likely to bounce back.
Despite a power-packed performance by the batsmen Dawid Malan and Kamran Akmal, who scored 43 and 88 runs respectively and got the total to a commendable 190 against United, they couldn’t win the match. Fast-bowlers Junaid Khan, Chris Jordan and Hasan Ali took a wicket each but they couldn’t stop the reigning champions from reaching the reduced target of 173 runs in 18 overs.
However, in the recent match against Karachi Kings, the bowling squad delivered to perfection with all-rounder batsman Mohammad Hafeez taking 2-7 to stifle the opposition. Speedster Wahab Riaz used his experience well to take 2-23 while Hasan Ali, Jordan and spinner Asghar took a wicket each to contain the Kings at 118. Eoin Morgan’s sensational 80 off 57 took the team to its first victory and they are a motivated lot now. Malan, Haris Sohail and Afridi add depth to the unit and they can help keep the scoreboard ticking in the upcoming match.
Overall, the team has a good combination of spinners and fast-bowlers, who will be eager to provide quick breakthroughs; the batting line-up is strong and can come out all guns blazing here.
Both teams come here at the back of a win and will be determined to keep the points coming their way. While Zalmi has the required firepower to contain the Qalandars, we feel that the latter with its balanced mix of all-rounders and in-form bowlers are better placed to win the match on Sunday
