The 2023 Blast T20 tournament continues with Lancashire against Leicestershire. Of course, Lancashire haven’t forgotten their loss to Hampshire in the final by one run in 2022, and are sure to be fired up about the new season. Lancashire already had a great start by defeating Derbyshire by four wickets (with four balls remaining) thanks to Luke Wells’ 66 runs.

Lancashire
Lancashire had a decent 8-4 record last year (with one tie and one NR), and apart from losing in the final game to Hampshire, you’ve got to be happy with the season overall if you’re a Lancashire fan.
Aussie batter Tim David (405 runs last season) won’t return, but Steven Croft (548), Dane Vilas (444), Phil Salt (390), and Keaton Jennings (325) are all returning. There’s also the addition of internationals like Daryl Mitchell and Colin de Grandhomme from New Zealand. Croft is quite the veteran player at 38 years old, but if he can keep averaging 30.72 runs in T20 games, then Lancashire has another shot at the title.
For bowling, Lancashire will again put their hopes into Richard Gleeson (25 wickets) and Tom Hartley (17), with fast bowler Gleeson especially performing well in Dubai recently. His 24.27 bowling average in T20 games can certainly be improved and we’re excited to see what he’s capable of doing.

Leicestershire
Leicestershire will certainly feel like they can get better in 2023, as their 8-6 record was not good enough for them to earn a spot in the Finals for last season. Leading scorers Colin Ackermann (367 runs) and Arron Lilley (316) will both return, although decent batter, Ben Mike (213 runs) has switched to Yorkshire this season. When available, the team will use international players like Wiaan Mulder (South Africa), Ajinkya Rahane (India), and Naveen-ul-Haq (Afghanistan).
Naveen-ul-Haq (24 wickets) and Callum Parkinson (20) led the team in bowling last season, but we’re especially excited to see what a young star like Naveen-ul-Haq can do in the T20 Blast again. He’s averaging 23.38 in T20 games and he’s going to be the key to victory in any match for Leicestershire.

Any team winning the toss is bound to bat first and take advantage of pitch conditions that heavily favour batting. The pitch overall isn’t too bouncy, which means that it’s going to go well for the team batting first.

Pitch and Conditions
The Old Trafford pitch typically favours batters, and any team batting first tends to make big scores and pick up the win. Currently, it’s 30-21 for the team batting first to earn the victory in T20 games on this pitch. Spinners have had good luck here in the past, so it won’t be surprising if we see some surprising wickets from spin bowlers.

It’s clear that the Satbet odds are suggesting that Lancashire is the favourite to win, and it’s not hard to see why, considering that the team is still fantastic and was only in the Finals last season.
Leicestershire does have good spinners to wreak havoc on a spin-friendly pitch, but the pace bowling is iffy at best and the loss of Ben Mike is a batting vacancy that wasn’t really corrected.
Lancashire has a great top-order batting lineup with Salt and Vilas, and Croft is still one of the most reliable batters in the league. There’s also some good spin bowling from Hartley and the pace bowlers are always reliable.

Vilas was an important part of last year's Lancashire squad and had 444 runs for the T20 season. He's averaging 28.30 in T20 games but we think he can improve this against a weaker opponent like Leicestershire.
He's young but there's a lot of potential for Parkinson, who has had 94 wickets in his T20 career. Spin can be useful at Old Trafford, and he can certainly pick up some wickets if any batter isn't careful enough.
It's not uncommon to see a century in a T20 Blast match, as James Vince's 129* is proof that it can be done. It will likely be someone from Lancashire.
