About the Match
Derbyshire is yet to win a match this season and is geared up to host Lancashire, who have already won a match in two outings till now, on 29th May at County Ground Stadium, Derby. Derbyshire lost both the opening matches and are looking forward to bounce back in the upcoming home game with more confidence; Lancashire on the other hand, lost their previous match against Durham but they have the ability and talent to move forward with a win here. The hosts need a win right now and they will definitely use the home advantage to dominate the opposition on Friday.
Lancashire suffered defeat against Durham by 16 runs after failing to chase down 156; the whole team got out for 139 runs and despite Prince’s brilliant 78 off 51, they couldn’t reach the target. On the bowling front, Edwards, TE Bailey and Lilley took 2 wickets each. Lancashire made a dramatic start to their campaign last Friday with a final ball victory over Leicestershire, with skipper Steven Croft’s unbeaten 70 off 39 and Alex Davies’s 25 off 27 setting up the platform for a successful run chase. The team has many talented players, who can help them bounce back in the next game; Ashwell Prince, Steven Croft, Alex Davies and Petersen give them a more solid-looking top order. In the bowling department, Edwards, Bailey, Clark and Lilley are in good shape to take wickets and restrict the opponent; they have the resources to bounce back with a victory here and climb up the group rankings.
Derbyshire lost their second successive match of the season, this time against Leicestershire by 7 wickets with 6 balls to spare; they had set a competitive target of 164 after recovering from the stumble of wickets when they were down at 78-5. Chesney Hughes posted a heroic 59 and Billy Godleman scored 38 to help them set up a good total. The bowlers however didn’t rise up to the occasion and failed to take wickets at regular intervals. Cotton, Wainwright and Durston took a wicket each but it wasn’t enough against Durham. They also lost their first match against Yorkshire by 7 wickets after crumbling to 128 all out; Hashim Amla top-scored with 29 runs while Hughes and Poynton scored 27 each but the others fell like a pack of cards. Overall, Derbyshire are quite confidence after ending the last season very strongly, winning five out of six matches; the team has several experienced players like Wes Durston and Hashim Amla and the arrival of Tillakaratne Dilshan will boost their campaign. Youngster like Chesney Hughes, Billy Godlman and Poynton performed well in the previous matches while Mark Footitt was the country’s leading wicket-taker last year. Overall, they have the strength and fire-power to win the upcoming match.
Derbyshire and Lancashire are both strong teams and will try to better their chances for promotion here. Although the contest could go down to the wire, we feel that Lancashire has better chances against Derbyshire to win the upcoming match on Friday.
