Leicestershire

Leicestershire has already begun their campaign in the Vitality Blast 2023 with a game against Lancashire yesterday. They lost this match pretty badly as Lancashire had no trouble in going past Leicestershire by a thumping margin of 8 wickets and with 51 balls to spare. Batting first, the Leicestershire team managed to score 99 runs all out in their effort. The Lancashire team chased down the target in just 11.3 overs for the loss of 2 wickets only. The Leicestershire batting effort got off to a terrible start with many of their top-order batters not contributing much to the total.

The first real resistance to the Lancashire bowling came from Wiaan Mulder who scored 25 runs from 24 balls with a couple of fours. Only the wicket-keeper batsman Harry Swindells managed to get into double figures apart from Mulder. The bowlers that wreaked this havoc were Luke Wood and Saqib Mahmood. They picked up 3 wickets each while giving away 11 and 17 runs respectively. Colin de Grandhomme was also successful in picking up 2 wickets for 28 runs from his 4 overs.

The Leicestershire bowler Mulder was also successful in picking up an early wicket in the Lancashire inning when he dismissed Luke Wells for just 4 runs. But after that, the Lancashire wicket-keeper batsman Phil Salt had a good partnership with Steven Croft who scored 46 runs not out from 34 balls with 5 fours and one six. He together with Daryl Mitchell took the Lancashire team home without any nasty surprises. The Leicestershire bowling attack was listless and after picking the early wicket, Wiaan Mulder also went for a lot of runs.

Birmingham Bears

The Birmingham Bears outfit has started its campaign in the Vitality T20 Blast 2023 on a winning note. In this North Group game played in Birmingham on 20th May, the team took on the Yorkshire outfit. Batting first, Birmingham Bears managed to score 200 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. It was a huge target and the Yorkshire team although making a valiant attempt at the target, ended up 34 runs short of the target. The entire Yorkshire team was bowled out for 166 runs from 19.5 overs.

Although they ended up setting a good target, the Birmingham Bears did not get off to a good start. Their 3 wickets were down for 32 runs from 4.2 overs but the player of the match Sam Hain scored 83 runs from 45 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes. This superb inning was instrumental in taking the Birmingham total to an imposing one. He was well-supported by Chris Benjamin during this effort. Benjamin scored 46 runs from 28 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Matthew Revis was the only Yorkshire bowler that escaped punishment and picked up a couple of wickets in the process as well.

The Yorkshire batting line-up ran into troubled waters immediately. They were five wickets down for 34 runs in 6 overs. Only Dawid Malan made a useful contribution with 43 runs from 29 balls at the beginning of the inning. Dom Bess and Jafer Chohan were involved in a useful partnership lower down the order but it was all a desperate effort and a win never was in the realms of the Yorkshire outfit after the early loss of wickets. Henry Brookes was the pick of the bowlers for the Bears picking up 4 wickets for 32 runs from 3.5 overs.
