The CSA T20 challenge 2019 has got underway and we have Lions vs Cape Cobras to look forward to as both teams get ready to play their first match of the tournament. The Lions are one of the more fancied sides coming into the CSA T20 Challenge and would love to start off with a win. The Cape Cobras showed some fight during the second half of the Momentum 50 over ODI Cup but have been underperforming as a side on the whole.
The CSA T20 Challenge is a sharp, short, tournament and getting off to a winning start is very important. There may not be enough time for teams to try and recover from a poor start.
The Lions have some very good players to help give them a shot at the title. Their batting is led by Temba Bavuma, Reeza Hendricks, and Rassie van der Dussen. All three of these players are in the international team right now and in pretty good form too. Rassie van der Dussen had a very smooth elevation to international cricket, showing just how much talent he has at his disposal.
Reeza Hendricks, on the other hand, smashed consecutive centuries in the Mzansi Super League and has since become the first choice opener for South Africa, overtaking the likes of Aiden Markram.
With the three of them spaced out in the Lions batting lineup, there is always going to be a gun batsman to watch out for.
These are not the only international players to look out for, though. Wiaan Mulder, Dwaine Pretorius, Aaron Phangiso, and Beuran Hendricks are also a part of the squad. This means that the Lions have two genuine all-rounders and some very experienced bowlers to bank upon.
Hendricks can generate some serious pace and is a genuine wicket-taker with the new ball. With Bjorn Fortuin, Phangiso, and the all-rounders to help out, the Lions are looking like a very settled and balanced lineup.
Reeza Hendricks, Ryan Rickelton, RVD Dussen, Temba Bavuma, PWA Mulder, Dwaine Pretorius, Wihan Lubbe, Bjorn Fortuin, Nono Pongolo, MP Siboto, B Hendricks.
The Cape Cobras may not have the same kind of big names in their ranks but they are not short of some very talented players either. Their bowling attack has Dane Paterson, who can be a bit erratic, but a genuine wicket-taker on his day.
They also have Dane Piedt in the squad to add some more international experience to the lineup. Ferisco Adams as the bowling all-rounder is also a good addition to the side. This means that the Cobras are going to be dangerous with the ball, no matter what.
Yet, this is not a bowling attack that is going to rip out the opposition too many times. The batting is where the Cape Cobras are going to win or lose their games.
Kyle Verreyne, Zubayr Hamza, Janneman Malan, Pieter Malan, and George Linde form a dangerous batting lineup. Janneman and Pieter Malan were absolutely brilliant during the 50 over competition. They have the power needed to be able to continue scoring runs in the T20 format as well.
Janneman Malan has already got a taste of international cricket and knows that he is just a few performances away from being a more regular member of the international squad.
Zubayr Hamza is another player that the South African establishment seems very excited about. He certainly has talent and has played some astonishing inning but he has a lot to prove in the T20 format of the game.
The Cape Cobras may not have the big names that the Lions have in their side but they certainly seem to have the batting lineup to cause an upset. They should not be taken lightly by any other side in the CSA T20 Challenge.
Hashim Amla, Janneman Malan, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, Simon Khomari, Aviwe Mgijima, George Linde, VD Philander, Rory Kleinveldt, Dane Paterson, T Bokako.
The team winning the toss is likely to want to field first especially with all the rain around

The CSA T20 Challenge match between the Lions and Cape Cobras is going to be played at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. There is a lot of rain around in Johannesburg and we are likely to see some interruptions.
The weather could make run scoring a bit difficult but usually, Johannesburg is a place where the ball flies off the bat. We hope that the rain abates and allows an uninterrupted contest to be played out.
This could be a close match looking at the batting lineups of both sides as well as the chances of the match being shortened. One single batsman could play the defining inning of the match and get his side the win.
Considering all things, though, we think that the Lions are the side to back in this match.
Back the Lions to win.
